Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should i sell my Serotta for a CAAD9?

I have a 1980s Serotta steel lugged frame and it is a bit too flexy for me. Im seriously considering selling the frame to purchase a caad9 frame, the 2010. I called my lbs and they said that cannondale don't usually advertise this but they can work it out with them. And from many feedbacks and reviews about the caad9 frames i hear they are very good. Don't get me wrong the Serotta is really nice but i want something stiffer.

Pics of my Serotta....

Beautiful.

I would keep the serotta and wait and save up for the caad9.

Yes. Keep the Serotta and get the Cannondale. The Caad 9 is an excelent bike and you won't regret it. But giving up something like the Serotta is hard and you won't get that much for it.

But the thing is if i do get the CAAD 9 i would be switching all the components on it to the Caad 9 frame and it would leave the serotta just hanging there.

That Serotta's beautiful, I'd hold on to it. Unless you're a heavy or exceptionally powerful rider, you might find that a stiffer frame won't perform a whole lot better. That said, if you conclude that the bike just isn't for you, a CAAD9 wouldn't be a bad choice.

Maybe test ride a caa9 at your lbs, see how you like the feel of a stiffer frame.

Average is one number, 23-28 is a range. Actual 28 mph average is Pro level fast and if you can you should have done better in your first race.

Can you imagine how fast you are going to be with a CAAD 9?

i can keep it up for 20 minutes. And the reason my first race sucked so bad is because the whole week my legs have been fatiqued, it's never been this bad. And i found out about the race the day before it was actually was held, so riding hard on the day before a race didn't help. In the race i was so excited, i made a stupid mistake by pulling for 2 laps out of the 5 and i was out of gas by the 3rd lap.

Ask yourselves this-what are you achieving by ridiculing his claims? It doesn't help the OP decide what to do about upgrading, which is why he posted this thread in the first place.

I would keep the Serotta and save for a Giant TCR Advanced 0, and put my wheels on that, but thats because my bike shop sells them so I get a discount, they are well specced for the price and in my frame size it would be sub 7kg.

Look, I know two kids that are on the United States Under 23 team (One is now with Lance's Livestrong Development Team), and that is pretty close to what they can ride. They will ride in the mid 20's in a pack for a hundred miles or so in a race. The fastest time trial in the history of cycling was Zabriske's prologue at the Tour de France at 33.954mph...

Now I rode for money for a number of years and never bought a bike. At the speeds you claim, you would be quickly "discovered" and would (as was previously mentioned) never need to buy a bike.

I'm not doubting you...but I"ve been to a few cycling rodeos in my time and known a ton of superior national level/Olympic cyclists.

If you can ride for 10 feet at 23-28mph, and for another 10 feet at 30+ that's believable. However, your story on the race does not wash. Fact is at a lower category, if you are that good, even on a bad day you'd still wax people.

Now, to answer your question, no I would not sell the Serotta. The reason is that you ought to be getting either free bikes or ones at a very substantial discount.

Hope that helps.

Hi...that's the warmup for guys that can ride like you. Most low category races are an hour or so. Most of the road races I was in, the neutralized zone was five or so miles.
