Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who makes the best carbon clinchers out there?

I am looking for some good carbon clinchers for my S-works SL2 and there are just too many options out there.

Who truly makes the best wheels?

Thanks.

I'd get custom wheels with Edge rims on nice hubs.

But I wouldn't use all-carbon rims for steep twisty descents.

If I were looking, I'd consider Reynolds, Edge custom (as above), Zipp, and Mavic Carbones in about that order.

What's the purpose of these wheels, and do you want clinchers or tubulars?

Since the thread title is "best carbon clinchers", I'd assume he wants clinchers.

And I'd say the for a clincher rim the Edge is the best, if money is not an issue.

Braking rim heat. The carbon heats up too much and melts. The heavier the rider, the bigger the problem. It is a real problem with tandems.

The best carbon clinchers appear to be those pricey Reynolds (can't recall the model name). They're like $2500+, weigh 1400 grams. The Zipp 404 58mm clinchers are very deep profile (58 mm) and not very heavy for all that (1615 grams/set). My Williams 38c's are about 1600 grams/set (38mm) and I love them. I would agree that the Reynolds Attacks or Assaults are a good bet too.

Fortuitous comment as I have been looking at purchasing carbon clinchers. The Williams 38s look good for the price. What in your view are the pros/cons of this wheel? I would consider the Reynolds Attacks but are they worth the price difference vs the Williams?

Corima Aero+ clincher rims ordered from the factory and built up at wheelbuilder.com are a great wheel and great value. They are also incredibly beautiful. Pinarello Most wheels are rebadged Corima Aero+ wheels. My second choice would be Edge wheels.

Edge rims built onto DT Swiss 190's would be my ultimate clincher wheel build.........

I'll field this one for PCaddy...

No. The Attacks are a bit lighter, but a bit more fragile. PCad rides his Williams 38s everyday and beats the crap out of them. No issues.

Personally, I have Williams 50C full carbon clinchers and have beaten them for more than a year. No issues or problems here either.

The money you save with Williams will buy a cassette, nice tires and tubes.

Cost no object...
Edge with White Industries hubs.

why do you want carbon wheels? maybe answer that question and 99% of riders will realize they dont need carbon wheels.

no one outside the pro ranks 'need' carbon wheels or a carbon frame for that matter.

If it is just a case of 'wanting' them, with no reason to need them, then sure, go spend the money.

Williams 38c's are 1600 grams, not 600, I just fixed the typo. Oops.

The Williams may be the best all around wheelset I've owned, bulletproof, light enough, aero enough, great braking performance with the Swisstop Yellow pads (included with the wheels I think) and they do appear to be bulletproof. And they also look great.

Zipps are a mixed bag. I'm not impressed with the hubs on my Zipp tubular 404s, but for all around performance, it's hard to beat 404 tubies. 1250 grams, aero as hell.

The Williams 38c's are more rigid however (less flex for out of the saddle climbs).

Carbon wheels are very nice indeed. That's one reason the pros all ride them. Plus they don't pay for them.

Do you need them? All I can say is that if you're racing, and everybody else has them, it's a little easier if you have them. But no, you don't need them. You also don't need a $4K racing bike, road cycling, BF, or your iPod.

But you do, don't you?

We're all totally F'd here.

Sure but he didn't ask whether or not he should get carbon. He asked which carbons to buy, implying he's already decided he needs/wants them.

"Want" is as good a reason as any to spend some money.

At a much lower pricepoint, you could get a set of Flashpoint 40's (made by Zipp) from someone like Wheelbuilder. With a set of 240 hubs and Sapim X-Ray's, they're light, and won't break the bank.

That being said, the William's 38s are 98% of the same product, but signifigantly cheaper!
