Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pet Peeve - Roadside litter from cyclists

Ok, fess up folks. Occasionally I see road bike tubes and spent Gu packets in the gutter. If you are one of these litterbugs, what makes you think you can just leave your trash behind? Don't you have space in one of your jersey pockets to tote your trash along with you until you find a garbage can?

For those who also hate seeing this, do you ever stop to pick some of this stuff up?

I picked up one one my century yesterday. I don't have as strong a sense of entitlement as some I guess. Especially cig smokers.

I'm just waiting for the day when one of these gu-packet-tossers to toss the gu packet in front of a police officer. It's illegal to litter. In some areas it's a $500 fine. $500 for a gu packet.

I wish all those cigarette smokers that toss out butts would get tickets. In some places I ride it's like the grass is colored with them, it's ridiculous.

And no, I never stop to pick up trash on my rides. I'll leave that to the convicts.

Oh, yeah, I do pick stuff up on MTB rides, no convicts out there to clean up. I do hate litterers though, really makes a pretty place ugly.

Them too. And just up the road from where I am there's a popular fishing spot ... and every Monday there's always a heap of garbage tucked in among the rocks. Nothing like poluting the very area where you're fishing.

Since when do convicts pick up garbage in the ditches? In Canada, school and community groups do it every spring, and then sections of the highways are adopted out and whoever adopts a particular section of highway is responsible for cleaning it up.

I try not to drop my litter on the road.
all garbage goes in one of my pockets.
sometimes it slips out from my pocket because of grippy full finger gloves.

however on windy days, sometimes when I put my litter in a garbage bin the wind takes it away as soon as I let go. No chance chasing it either because I lose sight of it or gets dumped in the middle of the road.

It's particularly bad when some kids decide to drink outside at night, but don't bother to clean up after themselves.

my boy has ridden in some where the entire bike lane was littered with empty co2 cartridges. these areas are heavily trafficked by cyclists, he claims the amount of litter was crazy unbelievable. i don't think he could've picked any up.

I have been ridding roughly 5 years and almost 30K miles.
In that time I have encountered roughly 2 gu wrappers and a tube. 0 Co2 cartridges.

"Leave no trace."

I see that trash all the time when I ride by areas where a lot of people go to train. At least I've picked up a few spare tubes.

I'm not sure I've ever actually noticed this. Where are you that this seems to be a problem?

I don't litter intentionally, but I have had empty things come out of my pocket on occasion if I didn't stuff it in well enough. I see far more litter from cars.

I'm on the local main bike route. I find the majority of the empty ksgel pac and co2 cartridges when my normal trash pickup day, Friday, is delayed one day because of a holiday. My can will be on the curb on a Saturday, the heaviest cycling day. People will try to toss their trash into the cans, miss, and ride away. No wonder my neighbors hate cyclists.
