I'm not sure how one would classify better/worse. To me Shimano is smoother/quieter, while SRAM shifts with a loud instant click.
From a value perspective, Rival wins hands-down. Also it's far easier to find reasonably priced SRAM stuff vs. Shimano (at least right now, this may not have been true about a year ago). Heck even Amazon directly sells certain SRAM products directly (Rival brakes for example, lol).
I'd also just support SRAM because they're the only company that seems to genuinely offer MORE value to the customer for less money.

Functionally, the latest Rival and Force is the same.

Thanks for the input. I just purchased a new set of 2009 Rival shifters for $200. Not bad. They will go with a 2010 Force rear derailleur, 2009 Force Front Derailleur, and a 2009 Force Crankset. Also noticed according to Weight Weenies, the weight difference in 2009 Rival and Force for the shifters is like 16g. And both are lighter than 7800. Looking forward to the Sram stuff. I'm a Sram virgin.

So you're saying if you buy Shimano, the terrorists win?

True. It would be nice if it became un-ridiculous again.
I'm sure it could happen.

I'm not betting that it will... but I'm sure looking forward to building up a SRAM bike. The Double-Tap shifting makes more sense to me than anything out there and I've had both Dura Ace and Record. Liked Dura Ace a bit better... Record is nice... but for the money? Meh, not impressed enough to throw out that much coin. SRAM seems to be the clear value. Should be fun.

the best sram group is a mixed group
the levers, brakes and rear derailleur in the rival group are all great, but the cassette/chain/front derailleur i like to run something other than sram. kmc chains are great, shimano cassette and front derailleur, either ultegra 6600 or dura ace 7800 for the FD, any shimano cassette will give you better shifting than the sram ones
the rival crankset isn't terrible, but i would run an aftermarket one or either force or red personally
levers: rival or red (red if you want lossless on rear/right)
rear: rival
front: dura ace 7800 or ultegra 6600, if not then the force FD as it's the stiffest out of rival/force/red, red having the most flex
brakes: rival
chain: kmc x10 or shimano dura ace/ultegra
crankset: lots of options
i think this would give you the best shifting performance with great value
