Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

oakley ? on transition vs standard lenses

I am about to purchase a pr. of Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ's and need some advice regarding their transition lenses vs their standard lenses. I am looking at spending around $200 if I go with the transition lenses, either the G40 or black persimmon, or... around $140 for one of their standard lenses, like the G-30 or VR-28.

Are the transitions worth the extra $60? Does anyone use one of the above mentioned lenses with any of the Oakley glasses who particularly likes or dislikes them?

I live in New England so my riding consists of anything from sunny to tree-shaded roads to gloomy overcast...any feedback appreciated...

Oh yeah, I did try the search function, didn't quite help out...

I have the XX with transitions and really like them. They aren't too dark on foggy days or when you go into a store. Be warned that they don't get as dark as normal sunglasses on bright days, but they're dark enough for me.

just FIY

some people seem to think transition lenses change instantly. but the change is actually very slow and gradual. . . which isn't ideal for situations where you're going in and out of shade. (tree covered descent for example).

I vote, yes, they're worth the extra $60. That's not a bad deal for Transitions. As far as pros and cons, I don't know of any cons except the price, and maybe the limited lens color options available. Transitions are nice any time that you're riding in conditions where light changes slowly: when you start in the daytime but plan to be out past dusk to dark, when you're riding on days when it's "partly cloudy", and when you're just not sure what to expect. Of course, Transitions also nice on bright days, but so are standard lenses.

I have Flak with transition, and I love them. My ride starts before sun comes out, and ends when it's bright and sunny. It's nice to have glasses on the whole time. Although don't think I would spend 200 dollars on sun glasses (and I didn't).

I would agree the the transition lens it slowly change... I had pair of radar with the transition lens and I like them them but I have found that my other radar with red iridium lenses work very well in different lighting....

I have Radar Path w/ VR 50 and they are well worth the extra $ for the times I ride ( mostly before/after work). In fact I think they are better in flat light ( dusk/dawn-overcast) than a clear lens or the naked eye because the tint provides good contrast (e.g. I can make out dips in the road better ) and they're more than adequate for bright sun.

The G40 has a darker range ( 9% to 40% vs 10% to 50% for the VR50) which could be a problem if you do much riding in flat or low light conditions.

As others have said - it takes some time for the lens to adjust. The VR 50 keeps pace well with gradual light changes ( i.e. transition between dawn/dusk and sunlight ) so you don't notice the lag but if you are moving in and out of bright/dark much they do get out of sync. However, I've never experienced a situation where things got too dark/bright to see - except turning directly in to the sun when it's on the horizon ( but I think that's the same as any shades )

Thanks for the replies, I don't think the Flak Jackets come in a transition vr-50, all I see on Oakley's website is g-40 or black persimmon.

I may need to re-consider the Flak Jackets and look at whatever is offered in the vr-50.
