Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After calling Trek direct today, they stated that there dropping the 5200 label for 2005 and rolling with the 5.2 classifier, also it will have the Madone frame but still be equipped with the 9 speed Ultegra parts. My LBS stated that the new Ultegra 10 speed should be available by October or sooner and the frame material to be OCLV 120.Trek sales told me thou that it would be the 110 material, I don't know if my LBS is correct on the 120 ?,price to be $2599.00,thought I'd pass the information.

i know it's reality with a nice CF frame, but it seems kind of absurd that $2600 only buys an ultegra-equipped bike.

I think this current trend to include decimal points in bike names is kinda funny

$3K m.s.r.p. for a nine-speed group?

As the proud and extremely satisfied owner of an '01 5200, I'd say "No thanks." I paid $2100 out the door in the fall of 2000 for pretty much the exact same bike except for the wheels and carbon seat post. I don't think inflation can account for the $900 difference in four years. Maybe that stupid seat tube fin is really expensive to make.

I'm like Caloso, I paid $2,100 just last year for an 03, even with the new wheelset.
For $3K it should at least have some gold plating.

I wonder if this means 5200's will be on big time closeout considering they being discontinued come October. I'm shopping currently...just waiting for new products to hit. Also wanted to see what I could get on closeout. Great bike...save a little money.

Very cool...but Unless there's talk about quality improvements, (like keeping water out of the frame, hi vis reflective paint, onboard lighting). I'm not interested.

I really like my 02' 5200. I thought the Madone frame is not liked as much as the current 5200 frame. The 2005 also is very ugly. I'll keep my 02'

Sometimes Trek's MSRP is a little high. It may be easier to have flexable pricing that way.

Tough sell above MSRP.

New ten speed Ultegra is approximately 1.6 times the price of the old 9 speed. This will account for a large portion of the increase in the MSRP.

Nope. Look at the specs quoted above: that's for the 9-spd. group.
