Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The next six months will be nothing but riding and learning the Argentine version of Spanish.

Ride reports will follow.

ahhhh your going to my birth country and city, nice job I heard the woman there are gorgeous. Plus you can ride to the beach any day, you want. As for the spanish version, you could speak how you speak spanish right now, once you live there for a long period of time your spanish might turn into what they call castellano. Its weird sounding, but its how they speak, my spanish is geared towards more Bolivian style since all my family are from Bolivia, so I learned to speak like they do. Hence what I am trying to say, you will be accustomed to speak like the Spaniards you will interact with.

I'm quitting my job, leaving my wife and kids, and moving in with my parents. All I'm taking are my bikes and a clean pair of shorts. But I'm leaving my self respect, dignity, a good job, a loving wife and kids, and a nice house.

Your plan sounds better.

I wish you well and also ask why (not that I'm implying "why not" but just wondered what made you go for it)

I know how the OP feels. I am hanging it up in Chicago and going to New Zealand for a year starting this January. I have not decided what to do with my bikes. I think I'll store them and get something for the time being down in sheepshagger land.

New challenge.

Plus I did meet a very intriguing woman from there. We have kept in contact for over three years since I first met here in Buenos Aires.

I just had the feeling if I did not do this, or at least give it a shot. I would be filled with regret.

I have friends who have spent the last couple of winters there. He's a painter, she has extended family there. They love it.

At the risk of hijacking this thread or getting it moved to foo, why are you doing that?

Or was this just a joke?

The wife and I are considering doing something similar, but to Italy. I'm fortunate enough to have a house there and we really want to learn the language better and see what life is like in Italy for more than a month.

Keep us up to date on your decision and journey.

Good for you!! I think it's great when people get out of the rut of normal everyday life and head off to experience life ... and especially to experience life through travelling to other countries.

Will you be able to work in Brazil? Will you be going through their immigration program? Or are you just going on a visitor's visa?

An interesting typo! At least I hope it was a typo...

I used to date a woman who was from Argentina while she was in the US. After her visa expired and she had to go home, I went to Buenos Aires to visit her. One night when we were walking through the city, I asked her why there were armed guards on the street. She casually replied that they had been having a problem with kidnappings, but not to worry. Apparently the kidnappers targeted only the locals, as it was easier to get the ransom money!

Also, she advised me not to bring my bike. In one case, she knew someone who had been "bike jacked" and whose collarbone was broken in the process. Also, the traffic in the city of Buenos Aires can be quite challenging, to say the least. Apparently the number of traffic fatalities in Buenos Aires in one year equaled those in London, Paris, and Madrid combined for the same time period! (I may have the exact cities wrong, but they were three major cities in western Europe.) Outside of the city of Buenos Aires is a different story. I was surprised at the extensive network of roads that were still unpaved. A cyclocross bike may be more practical if you're staying in the province of Buenos Aires instead of the city.

There were a few differences in the language that were confusing compared to the Spanish that I had learned during a five year period in junior and senior high. One is that the locals pronounced the letter "V" like a "B". Also, the "LL" letter sounds more like "SH" (for example, pollo sounded like posho).

Still, don't be deterred. I had a great time, and I would definitely consider going again. Try the empanadas and milaneza. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM. Have a great time!

Great. I did all my traveling when I was young. Nothing like diving into it. Argentina is excellent. Very intellectual folks. I've been to a lot of countries - I extended my US passport twice and stopped when I was 29 had kid when I was 32.

I was lucky enough that my work made me travel and live for over a month to Japan, mainland China and Israel and Ireland.
