Look 566 chipping
I have a brand new Look 566 and I was just out cleaning it and I noticed a chip in the down tube. The bike has 100 miles on it. I have a Specialized Roubaix that has 6500 on it and not a mark. I just called and they said they have to talk to there buyer Monday. I'm not to sure I want another one no matter what he says. I wonder if it was a bad layup or what. Doe's anybody have a problem like this. The chip is all the way down to the carbon the way it looks. If it isn't, it's still unacceptable. I really don't know if I would take a new frame at this point. I think if I have one chip in it now after 100 miles what's it going to look like after a 1000 ?

Did it have the chip at 0 miles?
Why would they care if you chipped it at 100? |

I really wish you all the luck in the world but I think your going to have a hard time getting a warranty frame replacement due to a paint chip.....

OMG a chip after riding! That DEFINITELY shouldn't happen, nor should your tires get dirty. You got ripped off dude.

Thanks Fred. It has a 30 day or money back policy so I don't think I'll have a problem. It's just the idea to try another one or not. I worked with fiber glass for quit a while and a chip will start leaving water in and that could lead to lamination problems. I'm sure it may be a little different with Carbon fiber, but I'm not sure.
I bought a brand new Chevy, it was cherry. Three weeks later, someone in a parking lot scratched my door. I called Chevy to complain, and they told me to STFU. |

Now that I'm over it and really like the bike I'll just fix it. It just that I got 6500 miles on the Specialized and not a mark. I thought that the Look may have had a different lay up.
Oh by the way, sorry about the Chevy. I've been there too. |

clear nail polish and ride.
|
It's entirely possible to kick up a big rock and chip the paint on the first ride. It's not a defect or something to whine to the seller or manufacturer about.
The clearcoat (paint) and carbon layup have nothing to do with each other. I have three look frames and none of them have ever got a chip in the down tube. One has been in three wrecks and still hasn't got a scratch on it. LOOK has a least a 1 year warranty on the paint and they are good about replacing frames if there is truly a defect. I ran over a large bent nail this year. It cut a 2cm long gash in the tire, poked a hole through the center of the rim and another through the side of the rim. It also spun around and scratched my rear brake and chipped the paint on the two of the stays. The wheel was a top of the line Fulcrum Zero and the frame a LOOK 585 with a very limited edition red paint scheme. Too bad for me, but it was all repairable. |
I think your problem started when you got a CF bike rather than a Titanium one. ;)
But seriously, I hope it gets resolved to your satisfaction. I really like those Look frames. |

When I started this thread I wasn't in the mood for sarcasm, but I guess that's part of the game. I got a feeling you were probably fit to be tied when that happened to you.I though, there may have been a bad lay up, on the bike I got. Sometimes they have, had that on boats. They sprayed gel coat on, that wasn't treated right and was to soft and it scratched very easy. Anyhow, I use to work on fiber glass boats fixing nicks and scratches and got pretty good at it. This job wont be that hard though. Anyhow thanks for the reply and good luck. |

It takes several coats to fill a chip but it can be done so it's scarcely visible. After I get the area filled I sand with 1000 grit wet sandpaper and polish the area with an auto polish. Unlike boats, that have a gelcoat that is applied to the mold first, bikes are painted after they are built. The paint is usually a high quality urethane. Solvents like lacquer thinner and acetone don't seem to bother it. |
Guess what I found out today. It's a hole and the hole is suppose to be there. I called up the shop and told him to look at some other bikes and they all had a hole. He didn't know why, but I told him the only thing I could think it was for, was a weep hole. Anyhow thanks again Dave for the reply and ride safe.:thumb:
