How long it took you to drop those pounds?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am 5'11", and currently weigh in at 179lbs. On June 1st of this year I weighed 216lbs. I sold my vehicle that day and bought a bicycle. I've been commuting via bicycle ever since, and began strength training at a gym 3 weeks ago (Every Mon-Wed-Fri). I have lost an average of 2lbs/week, and I feel great!

The largest cut in my lifestyle was my diet. I only go out to eat once a week or less, and restrict my beverages to water and herbal tea (hot). I prepare 95% of my meals in the kitchen at home, and as a result I've become quite the chef (at least people complement my dishes, haha).

I'm glad to see so many people here have began losing weight due to cycling. I will say though that I've accelerated my weight-loss by eating healthy. Eating nutrient rich and organic foods has been more of a commitment than not having a vehicle. I do plan on buying a car in the next month or two in preparation for winter, but come spring I'll be back on the bicycle. Thanks for this thread! I now have an extra motivator to keep me in line.
Well that pic is from 03, I did a low carb diet and got down to 185 and then gained it all back by 07. In 07 I started running and got back down to 195, then in 08 I started training Muay Thai and got down to 155, then I introduced cycling into my regimen to help keep it off. I guess it took me about a year and a half to go from 225 to 155, but with the info I know now I could probably do it in a few months. Like others have said diet is MOST important, but it's not just what you eat but when you eat it. I like reading all these success stories though, great thread, would like to see more pics!

This sounds like a shock to the body. That much weight loss in such a short amount of time can't be good for you.

If this is the master cleanse lemon-maple syrup fast, yes you can loose 1 lb a day and that 40lb in 2 weeks seems like a record. However I've seem so many do this and gain weight back. Also you really loose muscle, water and not fat. I do it to clean my colon not loose weight. Once a year for 5 days.

my BMI has always been around 20 or lower. If I want to loose weight in cycling, I have to do it the really expensive way.

For me, cycling had everything to do with losing weight. I think it must said, a part of me is left on those hills when I go up them. That part of coarse is fat, going up hills sure takes alot of energy from me and I burn those calories alot faster than any other sport I have tried. I love soccer but only play in the summer and only once (weekends) so that isn't a good way of excercise, with cycling you can do it everyday and almost never get bored. I think that is the main reason cycling is a physical activity I will stick with hopefully for the rest of my life.

I'm 6'4 and last Dec I weighed in at 293. I stopped eating carbs (sugar, starches etc etc) and started riding a beach cruiser about 20 miles a week. By July I was down to 245 and on an old Binachi. I got down to 227 2 weeks ago (on my new CAAD9) but with the bad weather we have been having and eating way too much I am back up to 231. Maybe I should go back to the beach cruiser.....lol

My goal is 215 by jan 1.

About 6 months ago I was at 199.5, the biggest I've ever been. This morning after my ride I was at 157.5. Over the last few weeks I've been hovering between 160 and 157. My goal weight is 155.
I cut out some of the bad stuff from my diet and I've been using a program called "Lose It" on my iPhone to keep track of what I eat and how much I exercise.

I"ll be 38 next month and I'm 5'10.5".

Hmmm...Five years ago I weighed 225 pounds at 6'1". Last year I got down to 170 pounds at 6'2", but that was mostly thanks to being incredibly sick. I'm now at 180 pounds, still 6'2". I want to see if I can hit 175 for racing next year.

i purchased my road bike on June 19. Since then, and almost 1000 miles later, I've dropped 40 pounds as of yesterday. I'm 5'10" and weighed about 250 when i started. Yesterday I weighed 210. There was a plateau at about 220 which lasted about 2 and a half weeks. Seemed like I just couldn't get under 220 but several 30 mile rides in a row broke that.

cycling clothes i bought in June no longer fit. a shame really. but that's what eBay is for, right?

I also changed my diet from strict vegitarian to eating fish, and an anti-inflamatory diet. All with mostly organic foods including fish, eggs, fruits and vegatables. I also started a good regimen of whole food multi vitamins and other supplements to provide natural energy and promote good overall health. It certainly seems to be working!!
