Arrogant Dr.'s Trial Finally Begins

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Driver Jailed After Covering Up Near-fatal Crash
By James Costley-White

Former showjumper Christopher Robertson has been jailed for seriously injuring a cyclist with his car.
A motorist who deliberately drove into a cyclist, left him lying in the road critically injured and then tried to cover his tracks has been jailed.

Christopher Robertson, 22, tried to 'clip' Leslie Smith because he felt he was taking up too much road, Guildford Crown Court heard.

But the impact on a country lane in Surrey last September left the 66-year-old cyclist lying on the ground with blood gushing from a serious head injury, the Surrey Advertiser reported.

Rather than stopping to help, Robertson, a former international showjumper, washed his car, replaced a damaged numberplate and even ordered a stable lad at his family's stud farm to take down and burn police notices about the crash.

During his six-day trial, Robertson insisted the collision was an accident, claiming that the sun was in his eyes so he had not seen Mr Smith. He told the jury he was so traumatised that he had convinced himself he had hit a deer.

But stable lad Scott Coleman, 22, told the jury that Robertson had admitted intending to 'clip' Mr Smith and send him into a ditch.

Robertson, who has a previous conviction for driving off after a collision, was jailed for 33 months after being found guilty of dangerous driving, theft – he had been found guilty of stealing a new car worth £10,000 at a previous trial – and perverting the course of justice. His own mother gave evidence against him, describing him as a dominating bully. He had already admitted failing to stop or report an accident and driving without a licence or insurance.

Mr Smith, a former IT consultant and grandfather of three, was taken to hospital by air ambulance, where he spent 15 weeks, including 20 days in intensive care. He suffered deep cuts to his legs, internal bleeding, a broken hip, fractures to his left hand, broken ribs, cuts to his liver and injuries to his throat.

Last week a driver in California was found guilty of a road rage attack on two cyclists after he deliberately slammed on his car's brakes moments after overtaking the pair. He was remanded in custody pending sentencing.

great, so the other day..while on a group ride, a motorist (who I happen to know) was given the finger by a rider who was riding three abreast. He did nothing to antagonize the rider, just waited till it was safe to slowly pass them. Lucky for the jerk rider that my friend is a nice guy and not a road rage lunatic. I myself was on this ride, but did not see the incident. As a cyclist, I do my best not to start things with huge rolling metal objects and their operators. That being said, you have to be wary of the lunatics who are out to harass you even if you are doing nothing except obeying the local laws and staying out of the way.

This gives me an idea. I don't think putting the "Share the Road" sign on a back of a jersey is the best way to solve our problems. Perhaps it should be more sincere and have something like "Please let me safely have my share of the road."

Demanding a share of the road versus asking for help might get a better response from drivers.

Too bad the type would have to be so small that anyone benevolently interested in reading it would have to tailgate you to do so.

Justice has been served ...

LOS ANGELES—A Los Angeles doctor has been sentenced to five years in prison for running down two bicyclists in a road rage assault.
A judge issued the sentence Friday for 60-year-old Christopher Thompson. He was convicted of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges for the assault on July 4, 2008.
Prosecutors say he had argued with the cyclists before slamming on his brakes in front of them in Brentwood's Mandeville Canyon. One cyclist who went through the car window suffered broken teeth, cuts and had to have his nose reattached.
Thompson testified that he and other residents were upset that some cyclists rode alongside each other on the narrow five-mile street.
The court has been deluged with letters from cyclists saying a harsh sentence would send a strong message...

I hope the victims can take some solace in the verdict and sentence. I hope the Doctor has learned his "lesson."

Also, it's "brakes" not "breaks".

He "broke" his rear window by hitting his "brakes".

Permanent loss of his drivers license, too. Maybe he'll be on a bike if/when he gets out of prison?

Let's see, after serving 1/3 of 5 years he'll be eligible for parole. So this guy gets about 1 year and 9 months for murder. One can only hope that one of the imates decides he needs a new girlfreind and makes his life the horror he deserves.

erm...I'm pretty sure he didn't kill anyone with his car. I know he seriously injured a cyclist, but I believe that was the worst.
