Specialized Cranks on a BB30 frame?
 

Do specialized cranks work on true BB30 frames? I'm interested in putting them on the new Soul Faith frame when it arrives, but I can't find any definitive information on whether or not they will work or if I should just stick with an FSA crank.

I have an S-works SL2 with the Specialized S-works cranks. Not sure since they are designed to be integrated with the bearings.

They are supposed to be BB30, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, but I've never seen it done.

why not get a force crank?

Price. FSA=$150, and I've found used specialized cranks for ~$200

BB30 is dumb.. ebay that frame and buy a 68mm bb frame

YES, the Specialized crankset will work.

BB30 is an industry standard. The spindle is 30mm. The bearings are all the same regardless of manufacturer, be it Specialized, Cannondale, FSA, SRAM...or whoever! The number is 6806. They are 30mm i.d., 42mm o.d., and 7mm wide.

I installed "Cannondale" BB30 bearings in a Specialized Tarmac BB30 bike a couple of weeks ago.

You can mix and match at will with the BB30. The guts are exactly the same...the cranks that are hanging off the spindle is different.

According to specialized's site replacement bearings are 30mm x 42mm x 7mm and The BB shell on my SL2 was 68mm wide also, so it does conform to the standard.

I guess I was thrown off because Specialized has "BB30 compatible" on their website, which to me implied that it doesn't quite follow the standard, but its good to know I can use a specialized crank.

Specialized didn't used to say their BB was BB30, just calling it "oversize". It was like pulling teeth to get someone to admit it was the standard size a few years ago, but in the 2010 catalog they do seem to list it as BB30.

+1. I have a Specialized crankset on my Cannondale. (Ironically, neither of them was labeled as "BB30." Specialized's "oversize" labeling was mentioned above already, and the Cannondale is from 2007, when they were still just calling it their "Si".)

But there's still a standard war going on as far as I can tell. Isn't Shimano doing a different press-fit bearing system called BB88 or something like that?

It's not really a system. And it's BB90. It's just the standard external bearings from a Hollowtech II, pressed into the frame instead of sitting in cups. It uses the same cranks and the same bearings.

BB30 will win, Shimano can't hold out against SRAM and FSA and Cannondale and Specialized. Just too many big players making the BB30 system, and too many nice bikes coming with it.
