Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Look Keo 2 Max

I'm currently using Look Keos classics and am planning to pass them down to my second bike. Has anyone tried the Look Keos 2 Max? Good? Bad? Sqeaks? Other pedals to consider? ( dropped speedplay after many years, like the looks better)

Thanks !

Here is one review I found.

Why shouldn't he be concerned with the looks of one of the only parts of the bike nobody can really see while you're using it?

I have colored rim tape.

Yep, using them. I like them a lot more than just the Keos and think they are a nice upgrade.

I think they are easier to get into for two reasons:
1) they tend to stay flat and not rotate like my regular Keos, meaning you just step on them and don't have to roll them over with your foot
2) I find the new metal plate makes the snap in swifter and sharper. Hard to explain, but just seems nicer and more secure

I can also tell the difference in the size of the platform. You can tell and feel it is larger.

I don't think they are such a huge upgrade that you should throw away your Keos but, if you are in the market for new pedals, like Keos...I think you'll like the Keo Max 2 even better. Have a few hundred miles on mine and happy with them.

Oh squeaks...nope, haven't had any. I have had them with Keos in the past, but some wax cures it.

Actually, I realized that I mis-read the OP. He said "I like the looks better," meaning in fact, "the Looks," meaning that he just likes Keos better than Speedplays.

Capitalization is your friend!

oooh. Yeah, that makes more sense. Although, on BF, I wouldn't be surprised if someone picks pedals based on looks (or cleats based on color).

Well... when I ordered my Zeros from PBK they had white, orange and blue in stock, no black. I would preferred black, but blue was better than white or orange and no sense in waiting, so... tool, not jewel, but we do what we can.

By the way, OP, haven't ridden the Keo 2.

They pretty much look like Keos. I wouldn't be expecting any major changes.

Came back to this post and had to chuckle. Was funny the way folks read my original post. Yes I am after Looks, not looks! (Although the white Look pedals will look great on my bike!)

I have a main bike and am building a second bike for rain and the trainer. I also have an extra pair of shoes. The plan is to toss the old Looks down to my second bike and upgrade the pedals on my first bike. I really like the Look Keos I own, and would be happy with the same or a slight upgrade. Thanks for the reply, I'll give them a try.

the keo 2 max is the old keo sprint with 15% more surface area and a stainless anti friction plate.

i've had about 2100km on the Keo 2 Max carbon. My only gripe is that after 2100km, the spindle is still stiff and tight. other than that, i think the metal plate is an improvement.

prior to the Keo 2 Max, i was using Keo carbons and Keo classic (still using Keo classic on my other bikes). the problem with the Keo Carbon and Keo classic is that the pedal body eventually deforms at the cleat contact surface resulting in poor contact between the pedal and the cleat. hopefully the metal plate solves that problem.

Well I took a detour and have decided against looks. I purchased a set of Shimano Dura Ace PD SL 7810's instead. Hopefully it was a good move. The pedals are in the mail now.

Anyone compare the Looks to the Shimano? I hear they are very similar.

How many km have you done with Classics? I have rode about 9000 km with keo classics and havn't noticed any deformation of platform. The contact became somehow weak after 7000 km- i changed worn cleats to new ones and the feeling was like the pedals were new. Maybe problems you mentioned awaits ahead ?

i have about 19,000km on the Keo Carbons. I have three sets of Keo Classics (on different bikes) with about 6,500km, 7,700km and 10,800km. Even the pedal with 6,500km shows signs of deformation. The solution has been regular cleat changes even before reaching the wear-out indicator. With the Keo 2 Max, there was zero pedal/cleat play with a severely worn cleat. That's how much of a difference the metal plate makes.

Someone needs to do a direct comparison with some Shimano 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace pedals, at least in its ease of clipping in/out, and security. Look claims that its got the biggest platform on the market but just by looking, I think Shimano still has it bigger.

My second bike keeps the Looks classics with my other pair of shoes.

So far, I am really liking the DA 7810 pedals, They feel very similar with a more solid feel. When you click in you know you CLICKED in.

My honest opinion? The DA cost $300. (Paid $200) The Looks cost me $80.....The looks are incredible for the money. The DA feel better but not enough to justify the cost.

And as far as Looks go, I like the looks of the DA much better that the Looks. But then again looks aren't everything. The Looks don't look as good with my DA crank, the DA look much better than Looks and are a better match-----------------

But who the hell cares about looks anyway? Look at the spandex we wear when we ride? I'm loving the DA pedals.

BikeHard CarboLite pedals? Whaddya think?

I like my Speedplay Zeros, tho' they're a zero in the looks dept. Drive train is all Dura-Ace so the DA pedals will fit the look. I like the float of the Zero's.

I'm getting some new shoes, Dromarti race. Since it's about $40 just for another set of Speedplay cleats, I thought, why not experiment. Just another excuse to spend money since this winter riding is becoming something of a chore... and it's not even winter yet.
