Shimano 105

Within the past month I bought a Fuji team 09 bike. For some reason it will not shift and stay on the bigger sprocket. I was told by performance that it needed a new shifter and they have ordered it from Shimano and that they have been seeing this problem. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

I've heard of it happening because of the way the 105 front shifters are designed to work with both doubles and triples but I've never had a problem with mine and it's two years old with about 5,000mi on it.

thanks man. Thats what they told me as well...

105 Big Ring Shifting

I had a similar problem with a 105 front with an FSA crank set, and was told by my local bike shop that Giant has had problems with 105 system shifting to the big ring from small ring and Giant replaced everything, no charge and it now works fine. If you Google your problem, you'll come up with several hits.

5300 miles, 1 year, 0 issues.

I have read about similar problems for reasons mentioned above.

Yeah. Isn't there a nice little plastic piece they put in the shifter to stop the shifter from engaging the second shift when it's being used as a double? I think it's something like that, and there have been many cases of it breaking.

Never heard of that. All the 105s I've set up were triples and what made them work for doubles was the outer limit screw on the front derailleur.

It's funny that the 2009 Tiagra levers are practically identical to the 105, and I never hear any complaints about them.

Yup, I was just reading about this earlier today. They simply adjust the limit screw.

When the new shifter arrives at Performance, ask if you can keep the old one as well. Useful spare bits.

So that's what it is. I guess that is the cheapest way of doing it for Shimano.

Same thing happened to me. Type in left 105 Shimano shifter into Google and the recall will pop up. Fortunately, Shimano was very good about replacing mine. It had to do with Shimano trying to save money by making the left shifter the same for triple and doubles.

That's interesting. I had an 07 Fuji Team with the exact same problem. Performance replaced the brifter under warranty a few times, but it would happen again after a month or so. Readjusting the shifter cable would fix the problem for a few hundred miles, but then it would get stuck in the small ring again.

Finally I fixed it by just swapping the whole drivetrain out with SRAM parts.

I don't have personal experience with the problem, but my LBS recently told me they have had a number of 105 front shifters come back in for warranty repairs/replacement. It came up in the context of discussing 105 vs. SRAM Rival (I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a Roubaix comp and it can be ordered with either gruppo).

Does it matter if the top of the lever says "Flight Deck / Double"? I was assuming from seeing that printed on there, Shimano was making both double chainring and triple chainring specific 105 shifters, but they are actually all the same?

thegunner 10-20-09 03:39 PM

probably a stupid question, but is this affecting both the black and silver variants of the 105s? i assume so...

I've also been having similar issues of a left shifter meant for a triple used with a double, I always have to click twice to go into the smaller chainring. I've had to adjust my front derailleur limits adjusted twice in the last 6 months because after a while, the limits become off (I assume from the "extra" shift pushing the limits).

I tried googling "left 105 shimano shifter" and other possible combinations but could not find a page about a recall. Can you post a link please? I would really appreciate being able to get a shifter meant for a double!

Thanks!

fwiw, mine is the black 105.

BarracksSi 10-20-09 04:22 PM

Mine's been fine. Trim in both positions, too.

is this for the 2009 version of 105, or 2010. just got a 2010 Cannondale with 105, and now i am concerned. wish i held out for sram.
