Heh, I have some Sks Fenders and those are fork guards... I TOLD them to use duct tape, but did they listen... No.

Hmmmmmmm.....2 Broken Cannondale forks posted on BF within a day or two of each other. Sounds like Cannondale may have some explaining to do.....

Mr_quadzilla 10-28-09 01:00 PM

Yeah... I was told about this CF failure over on FARK. Then hopped over to share my exp.
Drizzt: How many miles had you put into the fork? How hard?

I had 600 miles plus or minus a few. I didn't get a computer for a few weeks.

My bike was bought in May of 09. Interesting that your forks broke almost exactly like my forks did.

Have you contacted Cannondale or your bike shop about this? I am interested to hear what they told you. PM me if you would like.

Cannondale is going to replace my frame and fork at no cost. Seems the least they could do considering my seat, shoes, bibs, jersey, and helmet are all destroyed and need to be replaced.

Should I be pushing for them to replace all my gear as well? Seems like that would be asking alot.

Mr_quadzilla 10-28-09 01:24 PM

The shop said Cracknfail may claim it's a repair replacement and try to recover the cost of the fork =( That would make me very sad.I'm gonna have to talk to them directly. Our forks died at almost the exact same milage. I got the bike in May as a warranty for my broken six13, I tore it apart riding it. I shattered my leg teh next day 0(unrelated) started riding again in Sept. And it died at right around 600 miles... Scary. My front wheel is busted, everything else (except my jersey) is ok. I sewed up my bibs last night. Shoes are a bit scraped. Lost some material in my gloves. Nothing too major. If this was there fault (and it kind of seems that way now) I'd like a new FR wheel. I <3'ed that wheel.

I'd be interested to hear what comes of your front wheel request. I let the bike shop that I bought the bike from handle the talking to the cannondale rep. Not sure if any mention of gear replacement was talked about. I too am going to need a new front wheel. Again, it seems like asking Cannondale to replace my other gear is asking alot of them.

Actually I think it's not asking much of them. Your case seems to be clear cut they failed you, had they not you'd have your stuff. I'm starting to feel mine is too.

I find forks breaking like this almost inconceivable, but I also see the pictures. Assuming what we're hearing is all true, Cannondale is seriously up ****'s creek.

One breaking can be an anomaly, but I don't believe in coincidence when I see 2.

Are both bikes the same year with the same fork?

Thats not asking for too much, in fact you SHOULD be asking them to reimburse you for all of that. For all you know that crash could have killed you in some unlucky freak accident. Tell them you want your parts and clothing paid for, and then you will be satisfied. Because as it is right now, you have leverage, and they're at your mercy. Use it wisely.

Mr_quadzilla 10-28-09 01:48 PM

Same year (May '09) Both at 600 miles, different frames, maybe diff forks. Iono.
One note though, if a number of the forks will randomly break. I would expect that randomness to cluster like this. If X forks broke over T time at intervals of T/X it is no longer random, it is periodic and by definition not random. Coincidences aside if it IS a fluke, there's no reason to believe it wouldn't happen like this. That aside. Forks.Shouldn't.Break.

I miss Aliso Woods Canyon so much. You know those berms on Coyote Run? The ones out by the S turn they made to slow us down? I made those. One night years ago, during a full moon the night before new years. Those berms are my babies, and every time I visit my parents I have such prider to see others maintaiming them. You hit Como street yet?

tsohg 10-28-09 02:13 PM

Man, that's scary. I always figured manufacturers would overbuild the fork because a failure is so dangerous.

I suggest you drink a toast when you get home tonight. Anytime you can walk (or even limp) away from a destroyed bike, you drink a toast to your own good fortune.
I've cartwheeled a few motorbikes in my day, damaged a few more, and completely demolished one, but've managed to bust only one bicycle so far.

Glad you're okay!

two new Cannondales and the same thing********** oh man. Glad everyone's okay...

spthealien 11-03-09 02:29 PM

So any update as to what Cannondale's doing?

tagaproject6 11-06-09 01:29 PM

Any news from Cannondale?

Mr_quadzilla 11-11-09 06:33 PM

Cannondale is asking for $370 for the fork. I called them and pled my case that the fork failed causing the crash, not the other way around. They said they would send someone to my shop to look at the fork and make a decision. If I am forced to buy a new fork I'm selling the bike and discouraging people from using a Cannondale. This isn't how you treat a customer. As much as I loved the bike, I'd much prefer a company that will take care of me (like Specialized does) I tend to break things, often and through no fault of my own.
I've ridden with Specialized's warranty rep and asked him why I've broken 4 FSRxc's. We rode together and he got to see that I ride smoothly and not abusively. He told me I'm just one of the unlucky ones. I really hope it won't come to that, but I'm done with Cannondale if this is how they behave.

tagaproject6 11-13-09 10:56 AM

Wow! That does not sound promising. Keep us posted.

Racer Ex 12-18-09 04:46 PM

FWIW I have a friend who had this happen to him on a Cannondale during a sprint finish during a crit. He was pretty badly injured. The fork just failed.

Tsuru 12-18-09 04:50 PM

damn! wtf cannondale?
