Dog Stories?
Out for an hour ride tonight - out and back 16 miles. Anyway, pretty hilly route and on the way back I was hammering (for me) up this hill pretty good and as I get around 2/3 of the way to the top a dog started chasing me. It was decent size, barking, and looked mean as hell. I started pedaling as fast as I could and the dog was gaining on me. I spun the gear out that I was in and had to shift up one pedaling as fast as I could. At that point I pulled away from the dog and it quit chasing me. It was a huge adrenaline rush but when it was over, I thought my heart was going to explode. I just started laughing and luckily it was out in the country and nobody saw the whole ordeal.
Anybody else have some dog stories?

I've gotten chased one or two times. Spray some of your water on em and they stop right away.

1. Double-tap to upshift two gears. B) Get out of the saddle and hammer like h***; [iii] Recover by drinking the water you didn't spray on the dog.

Roan Mountain valley... surrounded by 5-6 dogs and i was climbing at about 9 mph. too slow to out run. I started screaming and hollering like a maniac and that froze some and enticed others. Emptied nearly an entire can of Halt spray on the 2 that charged. By then they backed off enough for me to get away. Descended at 45+ on my way back through. If I had another encounter we were BOTH going down! scared me so badly my heart still nearly jumps out of my chest anytime I see the kindest of dogs while i'm riding.

Today on my way home I had a hill about a mile long 10-12%, so I'm standing and pushing about about 6-7mph, dog comes up to me, little thing, looked happy. Barked and ran circles around me for nearly an entire mile before the owner came up in a car and grabbed the thing. It was pretty funny, the dog never really got in my way, I just kept climbing and it kept circling and barking.

A while back, I was descending a local hill at about 30 mph. A pit bull rushes me and while he was still on the shoulder of the road, he leapt at me. I was riding on the far edge of the pavement as far as I could get from him. Luckily, his timing was slow and he missed, sailing above my rear tire. He landed in the ditch on the other side of the road, he never touched pavement. The road wasn't real wide, but was probably 20 feet.

Just yesterday I had a guy pass me in a pick-up truck which had a Rottweiler in the back. The dog never barked but did jump out of the truck, which was moving, to come after me.
I guess the dog forgot he had a leash on which was tied to the inside of the bed of the truck. Lucky for the dog he jumped out on the side of the truck where he landed in the grass.....so he was dragged in the grass and not on the road.
The driver of the truck stopped quickly, the dog seemed un-injured. What got me was the dirty look the driver gave me, as if I had done something wrong.
That's my newest story. I'm sure we all have many we could tell.

You gonna eat that?
So Friday, on the way to work, I went by this golden retriever that was loose in the front yard of a house.
It looked at me as I went by.
Sorry, that's all I got.

June 25 this year. Descending a hill, taking a drink from water bottle, putting bottle back in cage, glance at CATEYE 33 mph. Boxer dog runs direectly in front of me from treeline at bottom of hill. We hit head on. I fly endo straight up in the air. Land on helmet, right shoulder blade, and ribs. Break collarbone, concussion, and broken ribs. Bike lands on top of me relatively unharmed. Dog unharmed. 5 weeks later back on the bike

Yep...Same story as yours, BUT...
Right when I was pulling away from the 3 dogs that were chasing me, and feeling pretty smug about it, when I quit looking back and started to look forward, the 4th dog came shooting out from the right, and stopped RIGHT in front of my wheel. BOOM! I ran over the mutt (seemed okay), but I flipped a few times, hit my head HARD on the asphalt (THANK YOU HELMET), and was knocked out for a bit. A bit of road rash...
I'm not worried about getting bit...just being ambushed and running over the dog...

And for folks who are ambivalent about the utility of a bike helmet, I can only speak for me, but if I hadn't been wearing a helmet that day I would probably be dead, that's how hard my head hit the ground...

Don't try this with a coyote. It'd run you down without breaking a sweat. I tried chasing one on the MUP once. I was up to 30 mph and the thing left me behind like I was doing a track stand.
Coyotes have been clocked at 43 mph, and are the 9th fastest land animal.

Yesterday we had a ferocious 10 pounder chase us up a gravel road for several miles before she got distracted by chasing a horse and we made our escape. We were lucky to make it out alive, as you can tell from the video. Dog is about halfway through:

I have found that a facefull of water from my water bottle will stop most any dog in its tracks. At least long enough for me to put a gap on them.
That, or always ride with someone slower than you...

Here's mine.
I took a friend's German Shepherd cross mountain biking once. When following, he had no trouble keeping up. While leading, he kept checking over his shoulder to make sure he wasn't going too slow.
At the end of the ride, I patted him and said, "Who's a good boy?"
He wagged his tail.
He was indeed a good boy.

I have iguana stories. They're on the road out of my neighborhood almost every ride. They lounge at my pool and crap on the deck. So after my rides, I come home shoot a couple, clean the deck and then get to swim. Oh the horror.

One evening, my dog and I were riding home on my motorcycle (she rides on a gas tank seat I made), and I noticed this older guy feebly trying to drag his 700-lb Harley Road King out of an ice-plant ditch by himself. It was pitch-black, but I caught a glimpse of his chrome.
We pulled over to help, but there were no streetlights, nor sidewalk and the traffic was still whizzing quickly by on the dark & narrow road--no place for a little dog. So I left her in her gas-tank seat on the bike to help the poor guy.
A car soon stopped and two more guys got out to help. The Harley was heavy and the crushed iceplant was slicker than owl-poo, but we were making gradual progress. "1-2-3-HEAVE, 1-2-3-HEAVE..." and despite the traffic whizzing by, Angel remained steadfast and stalwart on my parked bike. I was anxious about the cars driving so closely past her, so every once in a while when we were catching our breath, I'd look in the direction of Angel on the bike and say aloud, "You stay! That's a good girl! You STAY right THERE!"
Angel fortunately never moved and we finally got that heavy Road King back up on the asphalt. The panting Harley-guy offered us money, but none of us took it. I noticed his elbow was bleeding and asked, "You sure you're not hurt? You okay to ride home?" He suddenly stopped panting, looked at me very closely and said in a concerned tone, "No...thanks...I'll be fine, are YOU okay?"
That was a little odd, but it didn't dawn on me until we were down the road a mile or so when I looked down at Angel and realized: he couldn't see her on the bike in the darkness and therefore he thought I was talking to my motorcycle.
