Hip Replacement

Have had a hip replacement and now am cycling again. My orthopod assures me go as hard as you want.
At times I have slight pain in the femur region, mid thigh of the operated side. Should I push as hard as I normally would or slow down, a very hard process for me to do.

ask your doc. this isn't really the place for medical advice.

i'll say this. i play racquetball with a 65 year old guy with a fake hip. guy runs like a deer and can kick my ass. he has no pain ever.

Does that guy "Hipcycler" still hang out here? He could probably give you some advice. I'm kinda interested too. I have a gimpy hip and may be looking at a replacement down the road.

why would you take the advice from anyone but a medical professional?

Im sure your doctor has replaced the hip of more than just one cyclist and would be as good of a resource

Yea I would contact your doctor, but after the 8 weeks of recovery from my hip replacement the doctor gave me license to "have at it". I've been doing so ever since. That was 3 yrs ago.

After my shoulder and knee surgeries the docs said I should be ready to go. I found that I needed to start gradually and build back up.

One of the guys (Ed Pavelka) who write this newsletter: http://www.roadbikerider.com/ had a recent hip replacement. Check with him.

Did you have hip resurfacing or traditional hip replacement?

Whatever the answer, I agree with those that say consult your doctor. But if it you had traditional hip replacement, recognizing that I'm no doctor and haven't had traditional hip replacement, I would be more concerned about the symptoms you described.

As others said you must consult your surgeon what he feels is safe. I was very agressive starting riding very early. I did my first ride of 10 miles (very flat) 19 days post replacement. Last weekend at just under 8 weeks I rode 46 miles with 2100 feet of climbing. I am 61.

It is all documented on a blog I started about 3 weeks pre surgery. To get to the beginning go back 3 or 4 pages.
