Road velo morons

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I agree with what has been said although I do run into one problem. A lot of the roads I ride on are concrete panel roads. In the shoulder where you would ride when staying to the right is a huge seam. So if a car is parked in the shoulder and i have to move over, it is annoying to constantly cross the seam. You also have to cross over pretty quick so your tire doesnt get stuck in the gap and it probably looks like im swerving like an idiot.

An actual pic i found on google. you can see seams everywhere and they run parallel to the direction you ride too.

To the OP, yup, we have a stupid shop ride with boneheads riding on the yellow line or 3 abreast. I don't do it much anymore. I like our Sunday small group ride with 3-8 riders who all know what they're doing.

Agreed, bt the speed limits are usually 15 MPH on Ocean Ave, or Atlantic Ave. Usually the bicycles do a good job at keeping the motorists from Slamming on the gas just to get to the next available 20 dollar parking spot. I agree that cyclists overstep their boundaries, but there are so few advocates of bicycling rights that I sometimes don't pay mind to other riders behaving like this. Though I don't do it myself.

Great post!! I couldn't agree more. I started riding last year and quickly became awarer of the 'us against them' mentality that seems to permeate the cycling community. I have ridden on group rides where wanna be 'race' cyclists will ride 2, 3, and sometimes 4 abreast and not yield to motor vehicles. Some idiotic dream of equal rights for cyclists... While that might be the law, common courtesy will much further the cycling effort. Besides... the law of the road is really quite simple... 4000lbs vs 150 lbs what about that principle is hard to get?

wrong. wrong wrong.

this is not about morons, clueless idiots, inexperienced riders etc. This is about arrogant dicks who ride like that to inconvenience people, to exert some kind of power, to give the middle finger to other road users.

These people are bad drivers too and bad pedestrians who barge past other people, knocking stuff out of people's hands.

So there are dickheads in the world. so what?

So you just gave your lunch to the big kids in grade school too, huh?

Anyway most of this talk about riding all the way to the right (or left in other countries) is useless without factoring in where people are and what their road situations are like. Ride within a foot of the curb here in much of the D/FW area and you know what? A car is still going to have a tough time passing you safely. Here, quite a few of our roads have narrow lanes and no shoulder, so it is safer to take the lane (or at least to ride far enough out to keep people from even considering passing you in the same lane). YMCLV.

Did anyone catch the "Car Talk" Puzzler last week ? It was about a cyclist that actually followed the rules of the road !

What a brilliant analogy.

This is the stunning insight that brings us back to BF again and again. Thoughtful analysis we can get nowhere else.

These are the same peckerheads that ride in the far left on highways constantly. You won't change them as anything can drive a car/bike in America.
The larger the group ride, the higher the moron factor.

You're far more likely to get beaten by a bully in grade school than you are to get hit by a car on your bicycle. Since you're clearly all about the risk avoidance you should be teaching the kids to start capitulating in the shadow of might at an early age.

Anyway, good job on ignoring my second point, that your ranting is useless without any information on the types of roads you're talking about riding. Which is really what keeps me coming back to BF.

Anyway, shouldn't this really be in A&S?

I see your moniker agrees with you... aside from the personal attacks... cyclists that 'take the lane' for safety purposes (which I agree with) isn't the subject here.. it's the idiots that believe they can 'take the lane' without cause... because they 'have the right'....

Oh, well in that case I feel the same way about them as I do about people who pay with a check at the grocery store.

Lets see... The group consensus seem to be that we need to follow the rules of the road, yet we are not entitled to our share of the road?

Some you need to reassess your position.

I just think that if you stay to the right then maybe you won't piss off the cars and maybe they won't kill you.

Does that clarify things?
