Road velo morons

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's really not too complicated, but this does seem elusive for some of you.

Carry on.

I shouted at him to GET OVER I DON'T WANT TO GET ARRESTED and he finally did.

It is unfathomable. I've been riding for 20 years, I log 12K miles annually on the roads around here and I almost NEVER have a problem. That's because I STAY RIGHT, as FAR RIGHT as I can, and I don't want to get clipped by a car. I would say 20%+ of the road cyclists I see seem incapable of grasping this simple concept, and are a hazard to themselves and an annoyance to motorists. I have friends who ride this way. I don't like to ride with them for that reason.

And some of you idiots are worried about how unsafe it is to ride with an ipod? Yeah, OK. I'll tell you what, you follow your plan, I'll follow mine, we'll see who's still alive to blog here in 10 years.

Pcad's Rule of Cycling #7: Better to suck up a pothole @ 20 mph than to get clipped by a Ford F150.
Yeah I agree. I read about all kinds of conflict some cyclists have on the road here in bf. Im on the white line or very near it when I ride. I also pick routes with roads that dont have alot of traffic. I almost never have problems with cars beeping or otherwise giving me a hard time.

Oh, so you've done a statistical analysis that demonstrates a causal link between not staying to the right and increased risk of car-bike collisions involving enraged drivers? Nifty!

I was driving along a four lane road (35mph) in Austin yesterday and came across two cyclists taking the right lane as there was no other place for them. Cars courteously moved over to pass them then returned to the right line once their pass was complete. I thought "That's the way it should work". Then I got to the next stop light...cars were backed up in both lanes, and here come the cyclists up the right hand side to the crosswalk to wait for the light to change, putting all the cars that had just gone around them, back behind 'em! Then I thought "Well...they ALMOST got it right".

If taking a lane and the lane stops, hold your position! I always stop about 10 feet behind the car in front so if the car behind me crowds me I've got plenty of space to start up and clip in when things start moving again.

It's like coming to a 4-way stop with traffic...telegraph your intent to stop by un-clipping early and show the other drivers that you're going to stop. Of course, if there's no traffic, just blow through the sign.

I still totally agree with pcad ()

Also,..."i dont like having big cars driving slowly behind me. i would rather they just got past me and go."

This is where I was the last couple of rides because guys up front wouldn't get over. And it's absolutely unnecessary in many situations.

Some you need to reassess your position.
I'm usually quick to defend the cyclist's rights and place on the road, and I'm generally annoyed by the car-centric mentality (by not only motorists, but also cyclists) on the roads, but I think most of the instances mentioned in this thread are actions that I would not support. IMO, once you get on a road above about 30mph, its probably best to drop the socializing and get to the right, or consider finding another route to ride. Its one of those situations about being right but 'dead right'.

Edit: I think we all know where we belong on the road, when we get to that point. As long as you can justify your line by the hazards you need to avoid, you'll be alright- but those hazards aren't going to be all 20-30-40 miles of your group ride, so someone who spends the entire ride way out in a traffic lane IS really just being a d-bag.

Indeed. It is elusive for some to grasp the difference between just talking out your ass, claiming someting to be true and actually demonstrating that something is true.

We have just as much right to the road as they do.

</sarcasm>
Nothing drives me crazier, especially when you show up for a group ride and some individuals apparently feel emboldened by numbers to turn it into a Critical Mass event. Makes us all look like shmucks.
Or if a motorcyclist passes you on the right, don't talk about what reckless @$$#oles they are--they're just taking the only opening they can find.

Who can argue with this? Who would want to?

Follow the Pcad code. Then all you have to worry about is the red-light runners ... in motor vehicles that is; we don't run lights, do we?

Statistically, we know that there are is certain percentage of murders, psychos, dope addicts, etc on the roads and that anyone who rides in much traffic will encounter people in these groups every day.
Problem with this is some cyclists ride so much that they're bound to be maimed/killed by that 0.0001%.

Seriously, I can't agree more with you. Some of the stuff I've seen done by other cyclist made me want to run them off the road myself.
