Road velo morons

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same here in CT, "unless impeding the flow of traffic" ..... so we're supposed to go single file when cars get stuck behing us. Most of us do.

Theres cars over there, and there is no way we are gonna fit between her and the parked cars. Ended up being stuck behind her at 8 mph for 4.5 blocks.
That is Funny...

I say Heaven because I was out in God's country where, ironically, during this encounter we pass a sign in a farmer's field: "Welcome life. Stop contraception." My counterargument to this sentiment was barrelling on down the road.
.
Weird. The exact same thing happened to me Sat. 4 of us were riding 2 inches from the white line and a truck came up from behind and didn't even bother moving over to give us our 3 ft. No oncoming traffic...he just didn't feel like moving over. He passed us way too close at about 35mph compared to our 25. There was no way I was looking over my shouder to see him but I did see him coming up in my bar end mirror and could at least warn the others that this D-bag wasn't giving us any room. We held our line and nothing happened but it was unnerving just the same. He turned into the next gas station as we quietly rode by.

Then....hours later I was driving down a 2 lane road and coming towards me is a roadie and a bent riding 2 up and holding up traffic. I almost threw my bottled water at the tard...but I didn't.

I think I might have grown up and not realized it

i find the idiots who ride like turds 2 abreast down the middle of the road, with a long line of traffic crawling behind them, are usually the poseurs. idiots who aren't even trying to push themselves. just having a nice gently smell the flowers kind of ride. nothing wrong with those rides, but there's no need to be a turd just because you want to look at the scenery.

So... If you were riding further into the lane, so he couldn't have fit into the lane with you, do you think he would have gotten over farther while passing as he already had to do more than hold his line to pass? Do you think you might have gotten your three feet then?

You may think this guy's a d-bag (and you may be right), but you're the one who enabled his behavior.

As far as I know he buzzed us on purpose. It wouldn't have mattered where we were in the lane. If we were 2-3 ft off the line, I'm sure it would have aggravated him more.

And good luck with that riding style.

The same ol' "take the lane debate." There are situations where riding the middle of the lane makes things safer. On my most direct route home from work, there is a suburban non-divided four lane road, two lanes each direction, no shoulder, lanes not wide enough for bike and car . When I see traffic comping up from behind, I ride in the middle of the lane when they are far away. All but one or two morons will see the bikes (I only do this route when not solo) and move over long before they reach us. Those morons who don't look down the road get stuck behind me because everyone else thought ahead and grabbed a spot on the left lane. If I don't move to the middle of the lane, those morons will just squeeze through without slowing down. I find myself forced into a gutter with debris and drainage grates, while the left lane has to also move over for the moron sometimes as well. I tried one foot off the gutter, morons squeeze through at full speed. Three feet off the gutter, morons squeeze through at speed but also force left lane cars to move over. So now I ride right down the middle of the road so that the only way a car gets to my left is if the left lane is completely open.

The other interesting phenomenon I have noticed is that car drivers are more likely to be overtly aggressive if you are alone than if there is another rider with you, the arrogant doctor from California being the obvious exception. I am not sure what kind of bizarre psychology is at play, but its true. Do they think if there is another rider, the one they don't run over will beat them up? Take down the plate number? But if there is only one, then they can just speed away with no witnesses?

I suspect a large problem some have with lane taking is that riding the bike is a from of recreation or training, so that you are on a particular road by choice, at the time of day of your choice. A commuter has to take the roads that go to where work is when it is time to work, and that can cause you to view things differently.

See: Hanlon's Razor.

And thanks for the well wishes. This style's been working very well for me in the two years since I moved to the Metroplex. I didn't need it in ABQ, as the road situation there was much different, but adaptation's a pretty good trait, just ask that Darwin fella.

This ain't rocket science (it's a pcad thread for chris' sake!)

If there is room to share the lane, share it, if there isn't, don't.

Does this mean we should avoid all Pcad threads for fear of getting infected with a virus???

And does this explain why our computers run so slow while in your threads? Hmmm. I'm beginning to see a link here.
