I caress the offending dirt from my lovely cleats using a silk handkerchief dipped in VSOP Cognac. Only the best will do.

In Cambridge? Surely you mean pour Ridley's to wash off the student vomit, find newer wheels to replace yours that were taco'd by the offending drunks, then rode home.

I realize that I'm probably the odd man out because I use SPD (traditionally a MTB pedal), but I've never even thought of cleaning them and I've ben using them for about a year and a half-two years now.
Clean my cleats? When I run out of real things to worry about in my life, I'll get right on it.
But like I said, they are MTB cleats, and are made to get dirty. Road cleats may be a different story. I have no idea.

I cleaned my spd cleats with either an old toothbrush when the sole and cleat areas are dry or I spray some Pedro's orange/windex on the sole/cleat area scrub the crud off with same old toothbrush and let them dry.
My Look Delta cleats get cleaned, when needed, by spraying either some windex/Pedro's orange on them, scrub them up with an old toothbrush, spray a bit more to remove any stuff and wipe dry with an old rag.

I use Speedplays and I do clean them...everytime (just before) I lube them, which is part of the manufacturer's recommended maintenance. Otherwise I'd just be lubing dirt.
A quick spray with WD40 and a quick wipe with a paper towel is all it takes to clean them, badda-boom, badda-bing, done. If they're really icky -- which actually does happen, even on a road bike -- I might do the ol' toothbrush thing.
Lubing involves one or two drops of teflon-based dry lube, like Finish Line.
I do the whole procedure (elepsed time, 40 seconds) maybe once a month. Unless I stepped in poo.

The only time I think about cleaning the cleats (spd) is after a wet ride. Sand and other road crap covers everything. I take a stiff brush to the cleats and tops, a quick wipe with a towel to take off the rest, and remove the insoles to allow all to dry.

Never cleaned them... occasionally kick my feet against something to knock the dirt off.

Why do you need to clean road cleats? SPD-SL just spray with water bottle if dirt on them and then engage.
