Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Upgrade, since my wheels.

WOW!!! What differance.

I finally got rid of the old FSA Superlight crank, and installed an NOS Campy Record UT 10s crankset. The FSA was so flexxy, I got sick of not getting nearly as much power on a sprint as I know I'm capable of. My buddy, who is fairly new to road cycling, has been really taking off on me when we hit the hills. I thought I was just getting old and slow (well, I am). Today we went out riding, after I had just installed the new crank. I immediately noticed a big differance.

My power on the fast short climbs was much better than before. I was finding myself one gear higher, and spinning better. Standing up to sprint felt much easier with much better power transfer. The whole bike just felt better, and the response was quite noticable. I've ridden my buddy's bike with an Ultegra SL crank, and his is also super stiff like the Record. So, I knew the old FSA had to be part of my problem. Before, it almost felt like it would bog down on me from the flex, and I always had to sit, and just grind my way up the hills. Today was not the case. Call it a case of "New Gear Syndrome", or call it what you want....

.....This crankset ROCKS!!!

And YES, it's a bit dirty. I just got home from my ride.

I got it for $325, and $25 for cups...including shipping.

I would have done this when I first built the bike, but I built this bike a year before the UT cranks came out, and I didn't really want to buy the square taper version, knowing UT was coming out the following year. So, I got the FSA, because it was the lightest crank at the time, sans the Stronglights and Zipps. Then of course, when the UT's came out, they were $700, and I didn't want to spend the money on one, since I already had a good working FSA. But after many years now, I'm glad I finally went and got one. WOW, what a differance. My best purchase in a long time.
