Why are hybrid bikes not used as road bikes?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why are hybrid bikes not used as road bikes?

Discuss.

We're discussing suspension forks and disc brakes so why not?

Because suspension is completely unnecessary for road riding. Disc brakes would be OK (but not necessary). Dropped bars allow a more aerodynamic position too.

Of course, most hybrids rarely see an unpaved path. That is, the idea that hybrids aren't used as road bikes is incorrect.

Depends on what kind of hybrid- there is a wide spectrum. I use a hybrid (Specialized Sirrus) as my road bike. I put 23c tires on it and it is fairly fast. I like the more upright position as I have chronic neck and back problems and it allows me a better view of what is going on around me. If you can handle somewhat limited hand positions and a reduction in speed from not being as aero, there is no reason you can't use one as your primary roadbike. **Ducks behind flame resistant computer screen**

i think some of the high end marin hybrids are pretty quick. and i've been on club rides with people on hybrids that are essentially flat bar road bikes.

yeah there are such things called "performance hybrids" these days that costs as much as a full on pro roadie! At that point, I think the only difference is the flatbar instead of curlies.

Why don't bikes fly? Why can't we just use planes as road bikes? They're fast and lightweight!

Hybrids ARE used a road bikes. They are more upright and slower, but if you're out after a workout, they get the job done. Hybrids are, as the name suggests, a cross between road and mountain bike performance. They are designed for road or "beaten path" riding. Bikes like the 7.3FX by Trek fall between hybrid and road bike. If you look at them, they strongly resemble road bikes with upright handle bars.

God, this is what I love about BF...post up a totally sarcastic thread and get everything from dead serious to inquisitive to full bore humor.

I think pcad might be proud of us.

I like the "mules as horses" response....but let's not talk about sheep or anything.
