Cassette/Chain question
Alright so this might be a stupid question, but cut me a bit of slack, I'm still new to all of this.
I currently have a 12-25 cassette on the stock shimano wheels that came on my caad9. I'm getting a new wheelset shortly and was thinking about putting an 11-28 cassette on it. Would the chain work on both cassettes or would i need a new, possibly longer (?) chain for the new wheels?
Sub question, if I did need a new chain for the new wheels, would I then be able to use that on my old wheels as well, or would I need matching cassettes?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Some people make their own chainwhips. Just a piece of chain with a handle that prevents the cassette from turning while you unscrew the lockring.

My backup wheels would beg to differ. 6600 Ultegra works fine(despite what Shimano/Perfomance says.) Just make sure to watch the
limit screw. Your chain may be a little short. If it's long enough for the 28 it will work for the 25.
Good luck on your project.

Oh I have a chainwhip and a lockring tool, and had thought about just changing the cassette back and forth, however the cassette came stock on the bike and I figured if I have the oppurtunity right now to try something different, the extra little bit of gearing, in both directions, might come in handy. However I do not have ultegra or Dura-Ace, I have 105...so it may not even be an option.

To the op:
1) You don't need a 28.
2) Yes, your chain length will probably suffice for a 28 tooth though
3) You might need to adjust the "B" screw
Look for Sheldon.

Several people have far exceeded Shimano's recommendations for largest cog size with their rear deraillers. I set up my wife's bike with an 11-28 8 speed cassette using a Sora rear derailler. Given that your 105 derailler is spec'd for a 27 tooth cog (just like Ultegra 6600 and DA 7800), 28 teeth isn't asking much more. I bet it works without issue.
As to chain length, it will depend on how your chain was sized. If whomever assembled the bike used the big/big sizing method, you will need to lengthen the chain. If they used small/small, it will likely work. Visit www.sheldonbrown.com or www.parktool.com and look up sizing a chain. You definitely do NOT want to just chance it and mount the cassette without verifying chain length first. An accidental shift into the big/big with too short a chain will destroy something (rear derailler, derailler hanger, or frame).
