New here with a few questions
hi everyone-
i'm totally new to the sport (road) - i have a mtn bike and hybrid which i love, but i crave distance and speed, so i figured i should get myself a road bike!
i've managed to save up about $800; i know it's not a ton, but enough for a good starter bike i'm hoping. i've been looking at the specialized allez triple, and the scott contessa speedster. i've been reading reviews, comparing components, etc...but thought i'd ask everyone here their opinion on these.
Also, i live in a relatively small town - the selection isn't great. the local bike shop is pushing KHS and Jamis. i've always tried to buy locally and read on a thread here it's good to buy local. but i'm not sure about the brands and i've kind of gotten my heart set on the Scott speedster, which i would have to buy out of town at the nearest REI.
your opinions, suggestions, etc... are welcome!
thanks,
heidi

Get the bike you want. Any shop will wrench it if you need them too.

Have you not test ridden the KHS or Jamis road bikes? You may like them. If not try to find which one fits you the best and compare geometries with other bikes you are thinking about looking at.

save up some more. hit the 1300ish and you can snag yourself a used carbon. which will go a lot longer than some entry cheap crap.
plus, with a carbon frame, you can always keep adding new components and upgrades. so.. save more!

Buy the best bike you can for your budget. Spend some quality time on it and decide whether you like the sport. If you do, you'll probably end up upgrading at some point down the road.
My first bike was a black Specialized Allez. It weighed a ton, but I loved it and rode the crap out of it.

Yup, I'd go ride what your local shop has to offer. Then if you're not totally happy with one of those bikes, then go a bit further out and check out another shop's selection.
