Bike brand most likely chosen by a typical Fred?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The winning brand is correct, but the model isn't what you think it is. A classic Fred is on a 520, not a Madone.

(A 520 with full fenders, rack, 3 or 4 blinkies, an Airzound, Brooks saddle, and about 100k miles on the odometer.)

Actually, based on current poll results, I'd say at least 27% didn't.

Five years ago here on BF classic Freds rode old retro bikes while dressed in baggy shorts, sneakers, knee socks, retro helmets, golf shirts and had their bikes adorned with mirrors and lights and bells and whistles and for some reason frequently donned beards. Poseurs on the other hand, rode the newest road bikes, the fancier the more poseur, had the latest cycling clothing, and stayed about 10 feet behind the classic Fred whilst on the road.

Now anyone one other than a pro racer is a Fred.

The evolution of language, or a misconception of the distinction between the two?

I suppose that all depends on one's goals. When you say, "10% of us can become excellent at it" I would think you mean in terms of speed. Speed was never my goal. If I'm not even trying for speed, does that make me a poser? If so, what, exactly, do you think I am posing as?

What are my goals? To minimize car use. To have a healthier lifestyle. To use my bike as a transportation tool. By my definition, a poser is anyone who carries their bike on their car in order to ride it. If you're so geeked up to ride your bike, try riding it to your rides. Be a man.

I was expecting Trek to be at the top but I didnt expect 2/3 of all votes.

So after all, Trek Co should stop blaming Greg LeMond for declining sales because Trek is apparently too Fredish for many roadies.

Congrats Lance!

This concern over 'freds and poseurs' is getting as tired as the 'poseur/locals only' scene when skateboarding started to get bigger.
