Buying a wheelset - need suggestions.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buying a wheelset - need suggestions.

I'm looking for a good wheelset for around $400 or below. What should I be looking at? Thanks.

Easton EA70 or EA90's on sale (wait for thanksgiving). Ultegra hub / Open pro rims...always a common choice.

I'll second the Ultegra/Open Pro combo. Just go to your LBS and see what they can build for you. It usually results in a better wheelset.

I have EA90SL with the R4 hubs. I find it a very strong and light wheelset.

mavic ksyrium equipe or fulcrum racing 5 seem to be in that price range.

I'd check out wheels from here:
https://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com...iewCat&catId=9
I just picked up a set of open pros with competition spokes and 105 hubs for $265. They shipped in 3 days with reasonable shipping charges ($17), I get them on Tuesday. I looked at Mavic ksyrium equipe's too but they are heavy and more expensive then the above option, they look better though. If you want stronger rims you, could upgrade to cpx 33's for short money and still be well under $400...

I have a thousand time question
What do you think $259 +$27 shipping for Mavic Ksyrium Equipe SRM silver?
Or some one similar quality wheels for about same price. I will buy it.
You can PM on my email zubkovvw gmail dot com.

Thanks

Do you think it's a good price?

Also what do you think about this rim? What do these holes do?

Yes, and if you shop for good condition used wheels or new old stock, you can find it for less. That said, I bought a set of Kysrium Equipe wheels, $98 for the front, $149 for the rear - new. Good solid wheels and not having aero spokes is nothing to worry about. They are stiff wheels and handle well.

I recently bought a set of Soul S3.0 wheels:

https://bikesoul.com/2009/index.php?o...id=3&Itemid=11

Bikesoul is in Singapore, but their prices compare favorably with Neuvation, even after adding in shipping.

Nice wheels - they came in a little over advertised weight, but that may have been due to my scale's being inaccurate. (I weighed them around 1580g for the set vs. the 1540 advertised).

The wheels feel and look great.

Shipped price $373, including $8 for rim tape (installed).

Shipping took about a week and half. There also was an initial delay of a week or so before they took my payment, because they had a backlog.

They are great wheels, I went with the S4.0 a high profile AL clincher. $450 shipped They are GREAT wheels!!! They have the same hubs as their most expensive wheels($1,400).https://bikesoul.com/2009/index.php?o...id=4&Itemid=12

+1 on the Mavics; nearly bombproof!

At that price you are going to be on alloy rims if you go brand new.

Any idea what you are looking for in a wheelset as far as weight, aero, etc? What wheels are you coming from. There isn't a whole lot to be be gained over many OE wheelsets with only $400.

If you can get your budget up to the very low $600ish price range I can get you into a set of brand new full carbon 38mm tubular wheels. under 1400g and quite stiff. Of course there are other options when you get into that price range as well (although almost none that are full-carbon), others may very well be a better option for you even at that price range.
