Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bought on Ebay-2005 Lemond Versailles?

I used the 'Buy it Now' feature. It looked like a good deal so I pulled the trigger. It was like, Buy and ask questions later. I'm never one to make hasty decisions, but this looked like a good deal.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Did I overpay? I realized after that the guy works at a bike shop. I hope he didn't just slap a bunch of old components together.. I'm worried about the Sora brifters. Thanks a bunch for your input.

Splendid bike @ a VG deal. If it's as newish as it seems to be by looks and desc..... better still........ frames are getting 250 to 350 for the steels AND AL.s; complete bikes older than yours with similar or lesser comp. are won for 4 to 7. I bought a wreck for just under 2, just under two years ago for the brifters & such. It was worth it after losing bids for a hundred + on JUST brifters, missing windows etc.
I'm the wrong guy to ask; few bikes ride as well.

Why would you buy it and THEN ask for advice? Seems like a build up of quite mixed components. Dura Ace derailleurs and Sora shifters? 7 speed hub in back means a pricey upgrade if you ever want to go to 8-9-10 speed - basically whole drive train and rear wheel would need rebuilding or replacement. Also, good 7 speed STI levers are hard to come by if you need to replace them.

I felt it wouldn't last long with the $700 BIN price. Was it not as good a deal as I thought? I just saw Campy this Campy that and thought it was too good a deal to pass up. Obviously I'm not very knowledgeable as many here, that's why I'm asking your opinions. Thanks

I admit, I missed the 7-speed aspect. Still a decent deal and I can appreciate seeing it and why you felt compelled to post it. I suggest that you feel no buyer's remorse. When you ride it, it'll speak for itself. In the future, should the drivetrain wear or wear on you, relace the wheel(s) & brifters with 9 speed 105 or Ult, e-bay the Sora.
e-bay or otherwise sell the wheel(s), get new wheels as they don't "last" forever anyway and you have yourself a LeMond all the while.
I don't believe that I'm being Polly Anna here just reasonable, unlike the crappy deals I've made in the past.
My opinion .........again. Others will no doubt have theirs, argueably as valid.

Appears to be in good shape. Nice frame materials and good looking, IMO (I own too many Lemonds, so I'm biased). Good components (minus the 7spd Sora brifters).

Just curious about how the mixture of 7spd Shimano brifters and derailleurs(?? spd) will work with (what appears to be a 10spd) Campag crank --- did you ask the seller about this? If you don't have to fiddle around w/ this mixture, then you got a good enough deal. If you have to end up paying $$ and labor to get it all to work together then not so much.

I spoke to the guy (very upfront and seemingly honest) He is a mechanic for his bike shop.. so he was very technical with his details.. pretty much everything he said was over my head. He said the 7 speed Sora worked well with it even though some may think otherwise. My head was spinning trying to follow him. So if I were to change out the 7 speed for a 9 speed, what else will I have to change? If I went with used 105 brifters, what would be an average price for the used 105 brifters and used anything else that will have to be swapped out? Thanks again guys for all your input.

i'm pretty sure that rear hub is 8/9/10 speed.

To convert to 9 speed you need a new rear cassette and shifter.
same goes for a 10 speed conversion

I'd thought the same but didn't feel like adding a third posting 'till now that you mention it.

I suggest to the OP that you don't get ahead o' yourself; see if it does have "extra" cogs, etc.
Plenty of time to improve, don't get ahead of yourself. Many kind members here that 'll walk you through as well as direct you if not provide parts through normal channels etc.
EVERYBODY digs LeMonds and will be happy to oblige.

Interesting. I've never had a problem finding them on ebay. Price for RSX set under $100. Price for Sora, around $75 used, $125 new.

The freehub is a 8-9-10 speed so when the 7 speed gives up, the OP should up it to a 9 or 10 speed.
To the OP, it that was a 9 or 10 speed rear instead of 7, I would agree it was an excellent deal. As a 7 speed, it's a nice deal. I wouldn't mind owning that really nice frame. I'd say you should ride it and enjoy it. IMHO, that frame is worth upgrading in the future.

Good luck trying to open the brakes.

Campy brakes don't have quick releases on them, and shimano levers don't have quick releases on them.

That was a dumb idea for the brake. It's a good frame with bs parts on it.

Yeah, this is going to be a problem. Point it out to the guy, and I bet he'll make good on it, tho. It shouldn't be too hard for him to find some other breaks.

Only if you run tires that are much wider than the rim will could this be a problem. I use this combination and have no problem getting wheels off. I ride with the cable adjusters wound out slightly so I can quickly adjust in case I break a spoke.

I also run a 10sp Campy crankset with Shimano brifters. No shifting problems to report.

My bike is also a mishmash of parts that weren't good enough for my friends. But I'm not on it for style points.

He had the auction starting price of $400 with a 'buy it now' of $700. I think the "buy it now" disappears once a bid is made. What price do you guys think it would have sold for if it was auction style?

I don't know how many bikes on this forum are a mix of sora, dura ace, and campy ;-)

Nice bike, I like lemonds. I would upgrade the shifters. I've tried sora shifters and the rest of your components deserve better.

cheers

Decent frame, odd components. Even the wheels don't match. Definitely rideable, I don't see anything about the parts that wouldn't work together. Don't worry about the brake issue, you can carry an allen key in your pocket or seatbag if the tires won't clear the brake pads. Only nascar racers needs 15 second pit stops, know what I mean?

If the frame is in good shape, and everything works when you get it, you did fine. You can upgrade parts as they wear out, or as you feel like it. So long as you're riding, all's good.

i'm not sure it would have sold. someone may have sniped it in the waning seconds for $400. the best way to salvage the purchase is to buy some campy brifters and deraillers on ebay. their resale value isn't very good. i often see record shifters for < $200.

He said it was a 7 speed. If truly a 7 speed, he'll need a lot more than this to convert to a 9 speed. Personally, I would have passed this bike by if I wanted at least a 9 speed. If this is what you wanted, then you basically bought a framset. In that case, you paid too much. Also, one thing to note about a Lemond is the top tube length. If you typically ride a 55cm then this bike may be a bit too long for you.

Ebay ad states: "7,8,9,10 speed compatible, HAND BUILT"
If that's true, the seller has a 7sp cassette sitting on a full width freehub with a spacer or two.
More gearing would be a simple matter of a new cassette and a new pair of brifters.
