Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling in December?

I was praying for this. I've started cycling after a loooong brake in August and I thought that there is not much time left for outdoor cycling. Well, I was wrong I am not sure is that bad or good thing but we didn't have any snow yet in Toronto. As far as I remember same time last year snow was on the ground for a while. Took 45 Km ride yesterday and it was amazing

same here in MA. If I was home and not at school, or if I had my bike with me, I'd definitely be riding today...It's currently 63 degrees out

As long as the roads are dry and clear, you can cycle in the winter if you learn how to dress and expend your energy (i.e., not get all sweaty on a climb and then have 5 miles of descents to freeze your ass off). You harden off after awhile, and suddenly find yourself going out when it's below freezing. That's zero for you Canucks.

What guns have to do with all this is beyond me.

What road is that? It looks familiar, I'm thinking Lesley or Woodbine. Enjoy the weather while you can, December in '07 and '08 where not the greatest. Ice covered roads up here and 5cm I sticking to the trainer.

Low of 0F today, high of 22F. Man, I was hanging in there until we broke 15F. Once the snow and ice clears, I'll be back. Man, this time of year is hard.

Your gun obsession scares me. Real winters and snow and whatnot toughen you up more than riding around with a gun in yer jersey.

meh, I'd rather toughen up doing intervals and hill climbs outside rather than on the trainer.
Austin is looking more and more attractive, especially housing prices.
That and I can carry a side arm on my rides.....

I ride year round but my low is 0F.
Many of us in locations with an actual winter ride year round.
However, I was visiting Milwaukee last Jan and witnessed a messenger riding down snow packed streets at a mere -30F with windchill.
65er should be along shortly to laugh at everyone in this thread.

It's friggin' cold here in TN at about 40 degrees (it's 20 degrees warmer in my native land of Massachusetts!!) this week. But that's not too cold for riding. All it means is that I need to go and get some warmer gloves. This weather is fine for a long sleeve jersey and leg warmers. Now, riding when it's 25 degrees and colder out with lots of wind - that's cold! But with the right gear, it can be done without much trouble.

The worst part about winter riding here in New England (and other areas of the country that actually have a winter) isn't the cold.
It's the hour it takes to clean all the crap off your bike and drivetrain after the ride.
This has been a good year here in the Northeast, so far anyways.

It's 64 degrees here in NYC! This is ridiculous and I pray every night for global warming.

I ride my bicycle through every December. And it's not always 60º (like it was today) in NY's lower Hudson Valley, I can assure you of that.

They said the high in Albuquerque should not be over 20F today. I just went out for 17 miles and it is a bit warmer and yes it is snowing

Little windy today, up here. But nice and warm and it hasn't rained/snowed like they're forecasting--yet.

+1, only work not school. I'm looking at a sunny mid-60's day out my office window (in December!! in MA!!), wishing I was out on my bike.

I think my final ride last winter was on New Years Day. I tend to get flats after they've "sanded" the roads with sharp little knife-shaped stone chips. And I hate dealing with flats in cold weather.

I know! I actually had to wear a long sleeve shirt on my commute this morning. Talk about the cold affecting your ride!

Agreed. However, I have come up with a very elegant solution to this problem, which is to have a filthy bike. Cleaning the drivetrain can't be escaped though...

Yes, after that horribly wet summer fall has been mostly gorgeous. Hoping the rain holds off on Saturday so I can pretend that I didn't hurt my back running last week and get another long ride in!

The only thing worse than cycling in December is cycling in January or February . . . .
