Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

gore jacket questions

hey,

would like some input on the gore jacket. looking at the xenon race, oxygen, and Xenon AS. I want a jacket that is packable (all 3 are), and windproof. waterproofedness is a plus but not as important. will be using the jacket as an extra layer on rides, that i can take off for climbs/intervals, and then throw back on when im riding home or down some big mountains.

i live in vermont now, but moving back to NJ in 2 weeks before heading off to socal in a month. jacket should be best suited for throwing on when coming down mountains.

which of these is the "warmest" (i realize their all shells)? best windproofedness? most breathable?

any input?

I have a Biemme made with Gore windstopper like the Xenon AS. It's definately windproof and breathable. With proper layering it's kept me warm and dry down to -20°C XC skiing, but it's not packable.

Not what you asked, but have you looked into the Assos ElementZero vest?

It seems like it is what you are looking for (compact, functional, Assos quality).

i had an assos airjack i sold to buy this new jacket. was a fan of their stuff. id rather have a jacket though, since my team will supply me with a vest. and since i am buying it for 35-50 deg weather, id rather have a jacket.

the xenon as is made out of windstopper and they say its packable.

maybe i should rephrase my question. out of the gore Xenon Race, Oxygen and Xenon AS. which is the best suited for windproofedness, warmth, and breathability. they are all water resistance/proof and that is good enough for me.

They are all wind proof, warm with proper layering and breathable. Only the Xenon race and oxygen are advertised as packable. I mentioned the Biemme because I know that the material is not packable.

Do any of those have vents? I ask because I have 2 y.o. Gore jacket that does not. It fits great but I rarely wear it biking because while the shell keeps the water out it also keeps biking-level of sweat inside.

Fortunately, I got it for under $50 on a closeout and it makes for a great skiing and light hiking shell.

The Xenon AS is the jacket that meets your requirements. It encompasses the windproof material that will breath, though not much, and is packable. No windproof material breaths a lot.

The Xenon Race and Oxygen use Gore-Tex material that makes them waterproof - not just water resistant as in the case of the Xenon AS. However, even Gore Tex has its limits and if you're out all day in the rain then you gonna get wet. But it will probably do a good job of keeping you dry for two or three hours. For all practical purposes, Gore Tex will not be breathable. Not that you will be able to tell anyway. Unless you specifically need waterproofness, get the Xenon AS for a fitted race jacket. Or the Contest AS jacket for a bit more relaxed fit.

The clear winners according to Bicycling Mag (this month) 1. Hincapie Pacific 2. Showers Pass Protect 3. Sugoi Hydrolite

I have one of the original Gore Xenons (2 years old) and it can be stuffed in a pocket but I find it doesn't breath very well and can get sauna like inside. I also find it hard to put on or remove without stopping but that might just be me.

I have a Gore Tool jacket, 40 degrees on down. I use a windshell over it (and some layering) down to 15. Only madmen ride at < 15, especially if there's a wind (we can ski here!).

I have an Airjack, and it is very similar, but a much slimmer fit. The intermediate is really a fine jacket, but not below 40 degrees. At least not for me.
