Is this bike any good?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this bike any good?

I apologize in advance if this is against forum protocal, but I rarely check out the roadie forum.

I want to know if this bike is any good:

--for a big guy, 215 now, "racing" weight maybe 200+/-

--for my purpose--24 hour races (secondary-club rides, centuries)

--for the money--$1000 U.S. for nearly new, 9 of 10 condition

It is a 2009 Fuji Team, carbon. I don't know jack about new road bikes, really. I have ridden 24 hours, but on brevets, where time is a minor factor. My plan for the bike is to upgrade the wheels and add aero bars. So, fire away, and thanks, hopefully...

Wow, not even a look. I should have said I was going to ride a century every day on a Walmart bike.

Well, I'm not trolling; I'm going to ride 24 hours straight, on this or something else. I'll have to rely on the bike shop. Hopefully, they can give me a square answer. I fear they might try to push me on to the bike, to sell me add-ons, or off it, to sell me their bike.

It's a good bike.... with good parts. I'm about 200-210 and had those wheels once and never had problems with them. You will be ok.
You might want to put on a better saddle.... some proplr like carbon bars... But it is a good frame and allaround good bike. Wold get one myself, but I am into custom steel.

A WALMART BIKE?!?!?!? DON'T DO IT!?!?!?!?!? j/k

Since it sounds like you're new to road bike but you have aspirations of 24 hour rides, it seems like a "race" geometry bike may not be the best choice for you. See if you can pick up one of their Carbon "Comfort" bikes (CCR-1,2 or 3...whatever the comparable components are) for around the same price and it'll probably be a better fit. Speaking of fit...just make sure it fits you and defer to the LBS for this. 24 hours on a bike requires that it fits you well and that you spend some time ensuring you have a solid saddle.

+1 on the comfort models. I know it's manlier to run a foot of saddle to bar drop, but you probably won't be able to sustain that for 24 hrs. A lot of endurance-oriented guys, like myself (centuries and such), have these types of frames. I still have considerable saddle drop on mine, too, which is sustainable for me because of my build.

It isn't the bike that's slowing me down at this point. You'll appreciate not having your hips abocve your shoulders the whole time. With aero and drop bars, you'll have plenty of ways to get low enough. At the speeds of a 24 hr ride, it doesn't matter nearly as much, either, though you want the option for descents, variability, and wind.

Thanks for the replies.

I am torn on the race geometry issue. I could see getting a taller stem, maybe. But, as opposed to brevets and centuries, which I did last year (on a mountain bike, no less), the rides I want to try this year are races. In particular, the Sebring, Fl. 24 is largely run on the road race track, full of twists and turns. In addition to not fighting the wind, wouldn't a 'comfort' bike be slower jumping out of all the turns?

For PBP, I would definitely not bring this bike, but for this year???

ummmm...you're way outside of my area of knowledge with your 24 hour races but i just can't imagine that the competitive advantage you'd need in a 24 hour race would be a bike that jumps faster out of all the turns.

If it fits, it's a great bike. If not, get the "something else".

i'd be concerned about that geometry for a 24-hour ride. unless you have crazy core strength, and that bike fits you PERFECTLY, it's going to get uncomfortable.

You may have to stand up some. That is good for your circulation on any riding.

Well, it did not fit, so I did not buy. I'll have to find a 64cm. But, it sure was a nice bike for the $; a little less and I could have bought it just for the components.

I'm really enjoying this bike. Granted, I've only had it for 3 weeks and I'm coming from a 28lb '02 Fisher Sugar 2+ Mt. Bike which has collected dust for the 3 years, but I'm having a ton of fun. Sorry it didn't fit. Hope you find something that give you as much fun.
