indeed. after rereading my original post it did come off high and mighty, over the average out of shape american. so i edited, no harm no foul.
hate me if you want. The main point i was pondering was. do other people ride their bike so they can, to some extent brag about it. i see no difference with packing into a gym all day and bragging about how much you benched, just a different venue. I'm honest enough with myself to say, yes, there is a part of me that likes being able to say i can push my body farther then you can push yours.
Also Tele i meant within reasonable terms, of course a traveling salesman would handily out pace me. My demographic is more of the college age slack off. also sounds like you might enjoy getting a free ride and watching me wither after mile 70 on the first day. just saying.

There's good reason you weren't invited.

I'm in a fraternity Branden. I'm the one throwing the parties, although I am never the hung over one. Also i do not know of any one that has gotten laid 5 times in one night. That in itself should deserve a medal of some sort or other.

Who's Branden?
Do I feel superior to other people who don't share my love of cycling?
Well, no. Their passion is something different to mine, big deal. And regarding riding more miles then people drive...it's one thing to ride 100 miles, and another to ride it hard. You can do it at 15, 20, or 30mph and how far your "pushing" yourself varies greatly. So when you say that to others...I hope they consider that.
Do I feel superior when I smash all my friends in a sprint and have to soft pedal for 30 seconds before they catch up?
Absolutely. It validates my training program, and above all, my expenditure.
Do my friends feel superior when they smash me on hills?
I hope so! They earned it. It's a fair comparison, racing cyclist v racing cyclist.
Yours is not.
I think you should sign up for a couple of races. Cat...2. Maybe after you get your arse kicked you'll simmer down a bit and find some maturity.

I hate it when I'm regarded as a wuss for cycling. Its not exactly the most masculine sport out there, but still...

First off, I absolutely love just riding my bike, i have a Sirrus Sport at the moment but an 09 Allez on the way. Also the green movement gets quite a lot of help from cycling and I am pro Green. When I walk into a classroom in college on the first day of each semester and say, "I ride a bicycle farther than you can drive your car in a week." I don't know very many people that can regularly say that or even many people that can push themselves anywhere near that.
Do I walk into a classroom or my place of employment and announce "I ride a bicycle farther than you can drive your car in a week." or any other related comment? Nope! Even if it is true, why on earth would I want to make a comment like that?
Am I pro-Green? Absolutely NOT!!! I love the environement in which I live, therefore I am anti-Green. Green = Black.

See this brick? I tie piano wire on that brick, and then wrap it around my Love Missile, and I let it hang.
Then, I swing it. Ten times, back and forth.
Occasionally, I do jumping jacks.
I bet I sustain higher Gforces on my One-Eyed Snake than you do all year.

I don't ride to feel "superior". But, there is a certain sense of satisfaction when someone asks "So what did you do over the weekend?" and I can say "I went on a 105 mile bike ride Saturday morning." and their jaws drop.
Yes, I know a century isn't a huge deal to most here....and I can do them now easily too (it's just a matter of finding the time). The look from non-cyclists just makes me want to do it more. But it's not to make myself feel better than anyone else...most everyone is sure to able to do something better than I can.
Now, one day, I want that solo sub-5 hour century. Then I'll allow myself to be impressed with myself for my own sake
