Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Honest Pondering. Do you do it to feel superior?

First off, I absolutely love just riding my bike, i have a Sirrus Sport at the moment but an 09 Allez on the way. Also the green movement gets quite a lot of help from cycling and I am pro Green. When I walk into a classroom in college on the first day of each semester and say, "I ride a bicycle farther than you can drive your car in a week." I don't know very many people that can regularly say that or even many people that can push themselves anywhere near that.

This was edited from its original format, check the next post for the original.

Just a simple question, so if I offended you in some way or other well I guess you should comment about how stupid you think I am or perhaps actually answer the question. Whichever works for you.

Cheers
SpecialK.

by college i assume you mean high school, because this is some drama-queen school-girl-b****ing if i've ever seen one.

I don't know which "college" you attend, but they obviously have very relaxed admissions standards. And no, by the way, I do not "get a little giddy feeling inside because [I] know that everyone in there is think."

If you pay for the gas, I'll take you up on that challenge. Here's a list of places we can drive/ride.

Wasn't "Special K" Seth Green's character in "Can't Hardly Wait?" He was a pretty cool guy.

indeed. after rereading my original post it did come off high and mighty, over the average out of shape american. so i edited, no harm no foul.
hate me if you want. The main point i was pondering was. do other people ride their bike so they can, to some extent brag about it. i see no difference with packing into a gym all day and bragging about how much you benched, just a different venue. I'm honest enough with myself to say, yes, there is a part of me that likes being able to say i can push my body farther then you can push yours.

Also Tele i meant within reasonable terms, of course a traveling salesman would handily out pace me. My demographic is more of the college age slack off. also sounds like you might enjoy getting a free ride and watching me wither after mile 70 on the first day. just saying.

Maybe you should skip the ride home and take the short bus.

Where's the button for voting someone off the island?

Or would this become a lonely place, indeed?

Who cares what you can do on the bike...just do what you do and do it quietly..you will get much more respect that way.....the people who care or are curious will take notice.

yeah, you don't want to open that door, lest it hit all our asses on the way out

To the OP: I don't necessarily ride for that reason, but it is satisfying when people are impressed by the distances you ride. So I guess I kinda see where you're coming from. I wouldn't lead with that in a conversation, though

I do it to feel superior to how I'd feel if I DIDN'T do it.

When I want to feel superior to OTHERS, I just go look at political blogs of the opposing ideology. Perks me right up!

If you wish to feel better than everyone else beause you do not own a car I am with you there. Cars are causing the death of our planet so by riding a bike yes you are a superior person.

Once again, incorrect.
How do you know they don't push their bodies? Maybe they run a marathon every Saturday.
Even if they don't, it doesn't mean they can't.
Seriously, there is no way you are in college, not even community college.

Hmm. Wow. No, I pretty much do it for myself. I get a little competitive twinge for sure if someone else is a "racer", you know - trying to size them up without even seeing them ride... Usually I fail at that though, and I'm not faster than very many racers...

firstly, point out where you corrected me before in this thread Hao. Secondly i said average, i clarify myself in the post i even underline, bold, and italicize it just like this, average, as to rule out the exceptional people. to all of those who do run tri's every saturday more power to you and im sure you could out do me any day of the week. AVERAGE hao average. That's what i am going for. So before you question my education level you might want to thoroughly read before commenting, thanks.

ps. i would have rather sent this to you personally as i see if somewhat childish seeing as we will never see each other but this is just so much more fun.

cheers
