Help with pricing a bike
 

Hello this is my first post on here, but I have been reading around for a couple of weeks. Anways a friend of mine had this bike sitting around that he hasn't been using, and I have been thinking a lot lately about getting a road bike ( I have a mtn bike). Because I am car less at the moment and do most of my riding on the street. Anyways heres a pic of the bike, i have taken it for a ride and it seems fine. My friend was hesitant on how much he wanted for it, so if it were you how much would you pay for it??

I was thinking it had to be kind of old because of the gear changers are in a place I have never seen before. And at my LBS I saw no bikes with them on the frame like that

Yep, it's fairly old. Kleins are great though; find out what components it has.

It says Shimano 600 on the brake handle and on the main sprocket. But that is the only other markings I can find.

I was thinking somewhere around there , but then I did a quick search on google of "Klein Quantum" and saw some redicilously priced ones, probably a lot newer there.

$120 is a good price - nice bike. Don't get put off by how stiff the ride is & how you can feel every little pebble in the road bashing the buggery out of your nuts!

hahah yeah I noticed that!! Seems like a good starting bike either way. Why in the world are the gear shifters on the frame? Im pretty sure Im gonna eventually eat crap trying to change gears

You may find that it has a bottom bracket like no other as well. Pressed in bearings rather than screwed on cups. Just FYI.

Fwiw they are kinda fun to use and very low maintenance , but they it does take some time to get used to reaching down that far to shift.

The downtube shifters are fine, they're not exotic, they are not hard to use, they were standard equipment till the early 1990's. They are also pretty much bombproof and in some ways superior to the current brake shifter combination. Don't let them keep you from getting this bike. If it's in good repair I wouldn't have any problem giving $100-$150 for this bike, it will be a great starter.

Looks pretty clear to me that "And at my LBS I saw no bikes with them on the frame like that" means he didn't see any, not that his LBS had never heard of them.

I think you got a great deal... ride the heck out of it.

That bike is probably worth somewhere in the $300-$400 range.
