Best Sub-$100 Helmet?

Suggestions? I'm looking for a new one and am not sure what's the best deal out there. For me, Ventilation > Weight.
Thanks.

Bell Array fit the bill ($100)

For a little bit more, a Lazer O2 ($110), Giro Saros ($120) all msrp

louis garneau makes a bunch of good helmets. The oz-zy is about $140 but you can probably pick one up for about 50 if you look. good luck

Giro Phase suited me best

I like the Bell Sweep R and it can be had on sale in your price range.

just go to the shop and get the cheapest helmet they have

I got a Specialized Echelon for Christmas. They run about 65 or so dollars. I know there are some satisfied users on here, but they are kind of large (mushroom head effect) and they aren't the lightest out there.

That and the one that makes you least look like a mushroom.

I use Giro Stylus it runs 80 dollars I think. Very adjustable and provides a comfortable, snug fit.

I got my Specialized Propero for $110, and it's friggin awesome.

Just ordered an LG Titan Carbon for $90.00. Team Discovery Giro Atmos was the same price as well.

I like my Bell Alchera. I liked it even more after being hit by a car a couple of months ago.

Great helmet, light as a feather, airy, good looking.

Performance has the '09 Giro Atmos ons sale for $99.99 in the last flyer I got. The part number is 40-3978.

This is as good of a helmet as I have ever had, and it's one of the cheapest!

the one thing about most helmets is that they have poor ventilation right at the forehead. a friend of mine said that his specialized has good ventilation there.

+1 for the Alchera. Performance and Nashbar usually have it for $40-50 and it is decently ventilated. Mine also served its purpose when I went over the bars and onto the concrete.

It does indeed have good forehead ventilation (I have a Decibel). Unfortunately, the thin strip of padding around that opening comes apart about every 6-10 months for me, so I have purchased 4 replacement pads in the last 3 years. It also makes for some funny tan lines if you're balding like me. Still the coolest helmet I have ever had.

No personal experience on good/best helmets, but I purchased a Giro Atmos on sale from Jenson for $95 as my first. I had setteled on several models and started searching for them on sale. Only color choice was titanium, and sizing was limited (had mine). Look for the better helmets on sale, but be prepared to give in on colors.

Agreed.

I got a Bell Delerium was around $40, good vents, light, good adjustments for bacalavas etc..and for me, very important, bright Red
Bud

challaday 12-26-09 11:56 AM

I have a Bell Ghisallo that was $79 and is nice. It doesn't fit me quite as well as my Giro helmets have in the past, but my Pneumo and Atmos helmets were quite a bit more expensive too.

I think Specialized helmets look far better than any other helmets. I just had to retire an M-series (I think) from a few years ago because of the suggestion that you replace after a few years of use. Really sad to see it go, since I loved the looks of it.

Now using an Echelon. Nice helmet. But, make sure you check out the internal web systems on them - some Specialized helmets have a turn wheel (nice because you can adjust with just one hand - I'll loosen mine on long climbs as a small way of easing the suffering) and some have the sliding two-hand system. Oh, and the S-Works helmets didn't work for me, though I like the looks, because my sunglass arms hit the webbing on the side. The glasses couldn't sit on my nose. I have seen some of the pros put their glass arms over the webbing (not the straps, the actual webbing) but I didn't like that feel.

You might as well have a cool LED helmet.
