10 Mile Time Trial Question
If any of you ride flat 10 mile time trials, what were your times when you first started? Also what are your times now?
Thanks,
JP

If you can ride 22-23 miles an hour , for 10 miles, you should be in the middle to lower half of the pack, depending on the quality and level of the tt. The top guys are going to be 27mph +. Me , I'm above the middle but not at the top . : )

27mph on a time trial? That seems pretty fast. I am a beginner, 2 weeks, so maybe I can give you some reference. I have a 5 mile loop that I enjoy. I may ride it once, or may ride it several times per day. It starts out with a 1.8 mile straight shot to the waterway with a constant headwind every day no matter what. At the end of the road there is a stop sign I take a left. I usually don't have to stop just slow down, and unclip. Then after a mile on the hilly for here road a left hand turn to a somewhat inclined road for two miles, but I am usually out of the wind. Then another stop sign, my first fall with clipless pedal here, then it's off to the intersection of the road I started on. I guess I lose a little less than a minute with getting clipped in, and the stop signs. The fastest loop for me was 16 minutes, and 30 seconds or so. I am not riding full steam, but sometimes I push it pretty good. On the 1st part with the headwind I usually average 14 to 15 mph. I make up the time once the brutal headwind is gone. Doing the loop twice will cost me 33 to 34 minutes. I did the loop today at 17.7 average mph. I was a little surprised because on the brutal headwind part I did not push at all. I was getting warmed up, and did not think about speed. After getting out of the headwind I noticed my speed was 19 to 22 mph most of the time. I was pleased.
Good Luck,
Richard

riding your everyday loop is not the same as doing a tt. Two things are very different: the start and your nerves. If you push it and can maintain 22 mph in a tt you will be lucky to avg 21 because of the start, turns etc.

Well the speed isn't outrageous, as you mentioned you started riding 2 weeks ago, so your speed/time for your loop is pretty good.
Check out https://www.timetrial.org for some various results (takes some digging to find the course length).
Around here the 10mile TT'ers are doing the course in 21-27 minutes (21 being the first place guy, 27 being the last place guy...women range from 23 - 29 minutes, but they don't have nearly the same number of competitors).

g'day,
to many variables in wind, course etc to give a definative answer!. I've been going really well pushing 39-23 at 90+ cadence, HR at 180bpm doing 15kph! (extremely strong headwind) & I've pushed 53-11 at 110 cadence, HR at 180bpm doing 75kph.
As all participants in any T/T are 'in the same boat', you'll get better feed back from doing the T/T, then at the finish, chatting with the other competitors & trying to compare times & gearing etc. this will give you better feedback than people on this forum who tell you, you should be able to push this speed, or that speed, without taking in all the variables of an individual T/T race....theres no such thing as a flat road, windless day average......doesn't happen,
cheers,
Hitchy

My first flat TT is the only one I've done (about a month ago);
20k (12.4 miles) in 34.46 minutes
21.40 average
I came in 4th in womens cat 4 and about the middle of the womens field
I typically average around 18-19 on my solo road rides when the hills and headwinds are all said and done. It's my first season back on the bike for a number of years.
best advice was from one of the girls I talked to before the race; the first race in a way is the best because it'll be your best time with no expectations, no pressure (I was just out there to have some fun anyhow). after that you're always trying to best yourself (and others). I didn't even have aero equipment so I'm looking forward to coming back next time and stomping my time.
