my new SOUL's need some new tires to be ready for the spring. i have been a pretty big fan of the michelin carbon tires, however i have heard consistently excellent reviews of the vittoria cx's.
these tires are about $10 more a tire no matter where i look, anyone seen them on sale anywhere lately? are these worth the extra few dollars for me to try something new?
yes, another tire thread, but there's snow on the ground outside so...

I'll give you a free bump because I'm looking for some new tires and the new search function sucks (why can't we search specific forums anymore?!?!)

The best way to find tires you like is to just try a bunch and buy the ones you like best.
The Open Corsas do happen to be one of my favorite tires because they give a great ride and grip is excellent, particularly in the wet. However, durability is not impressive.

I was riding on OC's. I was running OC's exclusively until recently. I switched over to GP4000s and Gatorskins. I wish the Vittoria Open Paves were cheaper because I think that is the best, overall clincher for riding in all conditions and roads.
Nothing aside from tubulars rides like the OC's, however, but they are definitely a race-day tire. They wear out fast and if you ride in the wet you are at high risk of getting a flat.
In a way, I think the closest clincher in terms of attributes is the Michelin Pro Race 3.
IMO it's worth it to at least try them. Maybe for you the benefits out-weight the costs.

I got my open corsas at pbk last year for $34/ea. They only had yellow at that price, but I wasn't picky. They've been holding steady since at $49/ea. It's a tough call to make when you can get the 4000s for $38 currently. But you can also compare them to a $100 tubular tire and suddenly they don't seem so expensive.
There's a reason why these tires have such a loyal following. They ride super smooth and are the grippiest tires I've tried. I did get a piece of wire through my back tire a couple hundred miles of putting them on. Haven't had a flat since, which is maybe 2000-2500 miles. They're still holding up well.

I can't comment on the Mich Pro 3.

i like the michelin pr3's. had a couple of flats early on with them due to underinflation, but figured out optimal pressures. the rear showed it's casings after 4000 km of riding, to me an acceptable rate of wear for a high performance tire. i'm going to try a different set up this year. pr3's 25mm in back and schwalbe ultremo r's 23mm up front.

PBK I found always had the best price on them when I was buying them. I always have a few new tires ready to go, so I just wait for sales/play the dollar. I switched to Diamantes almost as nice riding, a little savings, more puncture resistant and longer wearing.

Open Corsas are the best clincher tires ever. That said, I only use them on my fair weather bike. They flat easy when it's wet as crap sticks to them. Diamonte's on my foul weather bike. The ride pretty darned well. Time will tell how they wear. Only have a few hundred miles on them so far.

I have OC's on my sunday bike and ultremos on my other bikes and for sheer ride performace the OC's can't be beaten. I was very skepical about the "rides like a tubular" but they are good (I've never ridden a tubular anyway).
However, if it turns wet then the ultremos are the better tire and I've ridden them all year round. I managed to get 3 sets free a few years ago and I've just taken my first set off and they were flat free for a good few thousand miles.
I just dont like the tread pattern of the GP4000 on the outer edge, although a friend of mine swears by them.
I'm going to try the ultremo r this summer but the "bulge" issues have me a bit worried.

My favorite tires...been using them fairly exclusively since their inception and pre clinchers I used the sewup version, which is even nicer...
