Too Much Time on My Hands

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Too Much Time on My Hands

Obviously.

Yesterday I decided to clean up my bike workshop and in the process of throwing away an old tube, I decided there might be a higher and better use for it than padding a landfill. Since I don't ride with gloves and I use a screw-in CO2 applicator, I'm always a bit concerned about freezing my skin on the cold tank.

So, here goes. They look like little torpedos all stacked up and ready to fire.

I know--spend more time riding and less time thinking.tubecover.jpg

I like it. Did you coat the carts in talc powder to make it easier to slide the tube on? I find that I come up with all sorts of things on days that I don't get to ride, or at night when I'm trying to sleep, but all I can think about is carving down a hillside on my vintage steel, (or right now, when I'm on bike forums, when I could be riding).

I tried squirting WD40 on the cart, but it just made my hands too slippery. Without any lube they go on just fine. There's a little residual talc inside the tube, I think, which helped. Sprinkling a bit more in there couldn't hurt. Holding the cart steady also presents a minor challenge. I tried a vise, but it works better to just find a hole that you can drop or screw the nozzle into to hold it steady. Think safe sex.

Of course the extra weight was my first concern when I read Daytrip's post. A little research allayed my fears. I can easily get 38 cartridge covers from one tube and since the unneeded valve is a significant part of a tube's overall weight this works out to about 1.5 grams per cartridge cover (it goes without saying one would only use ultralight tubes).

Great idea!
