FSA Mega Exo BB Removal

So I've got a new shiny shimano crank coming and I am trying to remove the stock FSA pieces. I got the omega crankset out alright, but I can't seem to get the mega exo bottom bracket out. Neither side is coming, it seems very tight. I'm not a huge guy, but I am relatively strong. Anyone have any tips?

to make it easy, use the proper tool for it. I'll link to the article on park's website here
http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=122

btw, make sure you arent over tightening the thing. There are arrows on the bb cups that show you what direction to turn them to TIGHTEN them. Turn in the opposite direction of these arrows.

I'm using the shimano tool, pretty similar to the park one. I will check the arrows though. I believe I am turning in the right direction. Does it matter if I remove the right or left side first?

it doesnt matter. It's easy if the the bike is on its wheels and you are pressing down. If it's too hard, use a deadblow or a rubber mallet on the end of the tool while keeping it in contact with the bb cup. Again, make sure you're doing that in the correct direction, otherwise...I dunno, bad things happen. Ask the ghostbusters about that.

Alright, I'm still trying haha. For some reason I thought the left (non drive) side was reverse threaded (so left looking at the bike would be tightening, not loosening), but judging by the arrows, right is tightening it and left is loosening it...

mike868y 01-05-10 03:49 PM

Nevermind that last post. Just got the non drive side off. Woot! Now on to the drive...

mike868y 01-05-10 03:56 PM

Yeah. Both bearing cups are out. Now I just have to wait until tomorrow (a day late) for the new cranks to arrive, thanks fedex.

Congrats! It's kinda wierd 'tightening' and having the thing come loose. The way they are threaded is based on the theory of 'precession' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precession

I picked up a Shimano r700 compact. $100 from jensonusa w/ bb included. Huge upgrade over my fsa omega triple. By my calculations it should drop almost a pound.

Sweet! I'm doing the same kind of thing - FSA gossamer to SRAM red. But even with that it won't lose a pound, unfortunately.

SRAM red cranks look awesome. The omega crank is really low end, so thats why their is the huge difference in weight. Hopefully I can kit some 3T cockpit components and my bike will be set for next season :)

Hmm - I just recently got a 3T rotundo pro handlebar. The crank will be nice, should save around half a pound or a bit more.

Nice. What kind of frame are you on? I think I'm going to get the 3t egrosum.

Giant Defy Advanced, carbon.

Would you get the aluminum or carbon version of the Ergosums?

I mistyped, I meant the egronova. I am going to get the "pro" aluminum model. Definitely a little heavier, but far cheaper and no worrying about crashing, etc.

mzeffex 01-05-10 06:34 PM

Ah, okay. I wouldn't mind having a carbon bar, except of course if I crash. I also got these brand new from a customer for $15. He just bought his cervelo, but likes our shop better, so came in and had us put on his already purchased carbon bars. I just gave him the labor "on the house" and I got the bars.

Nice! I'm bidding on some egronova's on ebay right now. Hopefully I will win them. If not, then no big deal.

mzeffex 01-05-10 06:39 PM

PBK has them for 62 shipped, in case the ebay bid gets above that.

Out of stock...

mzeffex 01-05-10 06:43 PM

Oops, didn't notice that. Well good luck!
