Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike advice

Because my first bike recently broke i need to purchase a new one. I am a college student and am fairly low on funds. I was looking at the Cannondale CAAD9 4 it costs about 1800 and includes SRAM components which I like. If anyone has any reviews on this bike, the SRAM components, or any other sub $2000 bike please help me out.. Thanks for your help.

cervelo s1, many on sale this time of year depending on yout location and size, around here (chi) they go for 1850

if you do need soemthing pro, then FeLT f75 goes for around 1500 and has 105 components

with that said, and before everyother guy on BF jumps on you...search button...

I was interested in the cervelo but its a little out of my price range from what i can find. Its 2700 with rival and 3200 with ultegra 6700 but i havent heard anything about the ultegra sl which is for 2200. as for the 105 on the Felt i dont know if im expecting too much but they seem like a budget low quality product. i looked at the bike but have never heard or seen one. please tell me if im wrong however

ive never riden the felt, but have 105 on my trek and they are solid componetns, dont knock em; the rear deraileur was a reveleation when i first got it. (i am sure i will say the same thind about the ultegra when i upgrade) if you are on a budget, compromise is always present. bicyling magazine has a review of the felt this month... https://www.bicycling.com/gear/detail...2686-0,00.html

kestrel for $1700? pay the extra $100 and get the caad9. TCR over the caad9?!
i did about 1.5 years of research on bikes in that price point. the most i could get for the college budget i had. everything pointed to cannondale caad9.

i bult up a caad9 with full SRAM Force (except brakes, chain, cassette) for $900 with the help of craigslist. i admit i did very lucky on the deals but it is possible.

i have tons of reviews on the caad line, here is one of my favorites.

3) frame pieced together in some dark corner of the underworld we call china, as opposed to the USA made caad.

First of all, most good bikes are made in Tawain now a days, X-mart bikes are made in China. That being said, Caad9 sweet bike, but for some reason nobody has pointed out that you should TRY THE BIKE. any bike over 500 dollars you should sit on and ride. You might take the Giant TCR, or Specialized Rouboiux out for a spin and like it as much or more than the Caad9 for your feel.

While everyone is quick to point out get this, get that, do the right thing and get what you want and feel right on. Not that I could imagine you NOT liking the Caad9 made here in my homestate, it is pretty useless to compare shop if you are not going to actually compare. Test rides (not that they can tell you comfort over 30 mile ride) really kick ass in making a purchasing decision.

Good luck!

PS- I love my giant and my Specialized.

Non structurally sound? Everyone who has the alliance frames loves them.. pretty sure they're structurally sound. Caad 9's are nice, I'm not a naysayer, but I like Giants better. I own a Giant and work in a Giant dealer, though, so I am a bit biased. And Taiwan, not china.

Correct me if I'm wrong - aren't new Cannondales made in Taiwan? OR will be?

Ummm, better than that. Many Cannondale Frames are Giants frames as Giant is the largest frame maker in the world. If you ever take the Cannondale tour in Bedford, pay attention.

Specialized I was unaware of. But I am pretty sure thats what the "tour guide" ad CD factory said. From what i recall the quote was something along the lines. "Very few of the cannondale bikes for under a thousand dollars are made in the USA. Only our 'homemades' generally costing from 1500 to around 5k dollars are made here in Bedford. Most of the other frames are special ordered from Giant and made in Taiwan."

Like I said, take the tour.

-most or all carbon cannondale's are now made overseas ever since the dorel deal. caad9's are still made in USA.
-im pretty sure giant never had a hand in cannondale frames.
-giant has factories in taiwan, china, and europe.
-i never said bikes made in china or taiwan were not good.

Including me. I only wish I had waited for the 2010 to get the Rival. Maybe next year.

i hate you so much

1) because you know... giant is putting out a product that they know is unsafe
2) he said tcr alliance, but it's definitely possible to get a tcr advanced if he shops around... i could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure that's a bike that's been raced to victory before
3) china is hardly an underworld you asshat, +the giants are manufactured in taiwan

your ignorance pains me (and yes i own a caad9)

Well since there are way too may C-Dales

Since that pic I've put on a Fizik Arione CX and a Thomson seatpost. A set of CK hubs laced to DT Swiss RR 1.1 are about to go on there pretty soon as well.

Most are made in Taiwan, as that's where the owner is from and where Giant is based. It's not an export, it's actually where it originated. Only the real cheap ones are made in China - ALL carbon is Taiwan, along with all the other bikes above X price point. All road bikes are, for example.
