Melted Helmet

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Melted Helmet

I was out of town for the week, can home, pulled my helmet out of the bag it lives in, and this is what I found.

Photo

another picture

It was in the bag with mountain bike shoes, arm warmers, and a thing of banana boat sport dri block.

I'm getting new sunblock.

Can't tell from the thumbnail of a pic, looks like a helmet after a good mtb/cross workout.

"Deep woods Off" melted part of one of my helmets with just a tiny overspray on the helmet. Maybe the fumes from the sunblock could do that?

I did that to a full face motorcycle helmet once. Back in the day, before California helmet laws, I put my helmet in the back of my hatchback and forgot about it. A few weeks later it was a deformed blob of plastic and padding.

must have hit something like 60~80 Celsius degrees in that enclosed bag.

either that or you had a chemical reaction.

some insect repellent specifies you not to let it come in contact with certain plastics.
some plastics and rubbers leech out stuff that melts other plastics, causes them to fuse.

Well, bag was in my apartment, so I'm guessing no high heat issues. It's a bell, but a cheap performance one.

That's a chemical-reaction melt. I would guess that that part of the helmet was right next to the "banana boat sport dri block", yes?

Styrofoam is very susceptible to chemicals. Pour gasoline in a styrofoam cup and we'll witness almost identical melting. The "Dri Block" most likely off-gassed something that is a hydrocarbon, causing the melting.

Just did some checking.... you shouldn't be using that sunscreen anyway. It can INCREASE your chance of skin cancer.

Indications
Banana Boat Sport Performance Dri-Blok UVA/UVB Sunblock Lotion goes on like a lotion and dries like a powder.

Ingredients
Active Ingredients:Avobenzone 2.50% , *****alate 10.00% , Octisalate 5.00% , Octocrylene 2.00% , Oxybenzone 4.00%.

Ingredients
Inactive Ingredients:Water , Silica , Caprylyl Glycol , Glyceryl Oleate Citrate , Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride , Adipic Acid/Diethylene Glycol/Glycerin Crosspolyme , Acrylates/Vinyl Isodecanoate , Crosspolymer.

This study is of oxybenzone and two other sunscreen active ingredients. Two years after the study this information is now reaching consumers,[6] but it can still be found in many sunscreens.
Oxybenzone is a derivative of benzophenone, which can attack DNA when illuminated. It generates strand breaks and various photoproducts.[7] Already in 1993 the use of oxybenzone had been strongly criticized, based on its similarity to benzophenone.[7]
The photomutagenic properties of these compounds might be a contributing factor to the increased melanoma incidence that has been found in sunscreen users. Other possibilities include consequent overexposure to sun without UVA protection and vitamin D deficiency from overuse of sunscreen.

holy crap, now i have to look through my sunblock to ascertain safety. thanks for pointing this out. looks like some of the other ingredients are also prone to form radicals upon exposure to sunlight...

Unfortunately, the higher-SPF will mostly contain oxybenzone. You may be better off looking for a lower SPF, which is cheaper and you may be apt to use more and apply it more often, anyway.

Some question the efficacy of any chemical UV block, though oxybenzone is among the worst in terms of safety (among ones that are still used). I'm beginning to lean toward the "sunscreen as myth" point of view, and I was formerly a staunch advocate. If it will decrease basal cell cancer (almost never fatal), but also vitamin D synthesis and possibly increase melanoma rates (almost always fatal if not caught early), I'll go without unless burning is the issue. And this is the way the science I have seen seems to point.

I melted my gloves to my hands with some deep woods off. That crap is nasty.

I still suspect his shoes. Probably offgassing all kinds of stuff.

You gotta love those extracts from reports on scientific studies with no citing nor links.

Funny, you know that carbon monoxide is very dangerous to your health, so by association, oxygen must be, too, because it is closely associated with carbon monoxide.

And of course, salt must be really, really dangerous for you because it is a derivative of sodium, one of the most volatile metals, and chlorine which is highly toxic.

I get very wary of reports that try to link one compound with the effects of another because one is a derivative of the other.

Do you have a list of recommended sunblocks? How high an SPF number is likely to have this bad stuff?

This is why I store things like my shoes and helmet in open, dry, climate controlled areas.

The arguments against oxybenzone are based on its photochemistry. It produces radicals when exposed to UV; it essentially transfers energy from UV into electrons. It carcinogenic properties aren't proven, but logical. It would make sense to not create one type of DNA damage in lieu of another, wouldn't it? I'd take my chances with the natural process, personally. I have some innate capability to repair thymine dimers, but possibly littlw to buffer against the effects of a novel modern chemical.
