Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

David Zabriskie broke my heart this morning

Like literally, it hurts to breath. I was headed out on PCH for a nice 60 mile ride up to Pepperdine and I see a guy pass me in a Garmin kit on a Garmin bike with Garmin everything. Noticed he had a mirror on his handle bar so according to bike forums it couldn't be a pro.

I sped up and noticed his name sticker on his bike.... D.Zabriskie. I rode up to him and said "Hi are you Dave Zabriskie?" He was very nice, pretty shy, I said nice to meet you and have a good ride. He looked back and said I'm not going to drop you probably. So I rode on his wheel for about half an hour before my turn around point. His tempo speed was damn near if not above my threshold, it was ridiculous.

He did slow up on a climb a bit to chat, he's a pretty funny guy and really nice, I definitely will not forget this ride. It's not often you get to be one on one with one of the fastest cyclists in the world.

So I think we can let the mirror=Fred conversations go right?

Are you sure it was DZ? Because he says he doesn't wear his Garmin clothing unless he's racing.

Very cool. Always nice to see that some of these pros are somewhat down-to-earth.

He wasn't in an official race peloton with his group.. Those who have a survival instinct on the coastal highway , might not think a mirror to be too fred. ? Winter in California. - Is bumping into a pro racer on a scenic highway all that rare.?...
...Still, congratulations . Bumping into pros is a big deal.. He likely , secretly appreciated being outed as a pro cyclist..

Yah it was definitely Dave Zabriskie, the first thing that made me think it might be him was I could see he was wearing a USA Champ jersey through his mirror lol. Dude cracked me up, one of our convos went like this -

Dave: What team do you race for?
Me: Remax.
Dave: Sweet do you get a foreclosed home deal instead of a frame deal?
Me: Yah I got a sweet Canondale and a two story town house this year!
Dave: Damn I need to switch teams.
Me: What team do you race for?
Dave: Oh I'm with this Garmin team.
Me: Oh cool, I've never heard of them but I bet you guys are super fast.

You should have said: "They miss you."
"Who?"
"Deez Nutz!"

I know that's low. But I suck at these things.

Wait - what KIND of mirror was it. I need to get the exact same kind, because obviously that kind is the best for me to use because it's what the pros use.

Obviously a n00b. Even the Freds know that the only mirror to get is the Take-A-Look.

The bar-end model the only kind to have, IMO. You can adjust it so that you can watch your massive left guad glisten in the sunlight as you drope the hamer on some Fred.

Seriously, I have one and it works pretty well. That said, I'm getting better at cranking my head around to eyeball approaching cars, because I got freaked out by all the stories of people, like Pharding, who got whacked from behind and badly boogered up. I figure if they look like they're trying to run me down, I might have time to bail. Obviously, this is only practical on lightly traveled backroads, but that's generally where I try to ride.

Lamentably, no cycling legends to meet on the highways and byways of Central New York.

Great story, nick.

That's what's cool about California in the "Winter", many pros train here now.

Just the other day I ran into a pro wearing a "Platinum" kit on a black Specialized coming out of Hope Ranch dropping into Santa Barbara and heading up towards Shoreline.

I passed one of the guys on the Kelly Benefit Strategies team a couple weeks ago while on my way to school. Granted we were stopped at a light and I started moving first, but he didn't pass me before I made my turn.

But he was just a continental pro. And I think he was doing a slower ride because he was riding with someone in a Slow Step kit.
