How bad does this look

So i took a ride today on Henry Hudson drive in NJ. There were a few sketchy spots, and i slid on one of them. My left knee is hurting but it should be okay. Open coming home & doing some inspections, this is what i saw on the tob tube. The bike is a 2007 six13, and its TT contains carbon glued by epoxy to aluminum. The scratch on the TT is on the aluminum portion. For now, it looks like a purely clearcoat issue. What do you guys think? & what do i do to fix up clearcoats? I know there were issues with older iterations of the six13 where the epoxy was compromised when sweat dissolved the clearcoat.http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ZS79zroFGuE/S0...0/IMG_0075.JPG

I see aluminum through it, so it shouldn't be an issue.

garysol1 01-10-10 06:24 PM

Looks to me like all of the damage is contained in the aluminum area. I would touch up the paint and ride it like ya stole it!

clausen 01-10-10 06:36 PM

I would have a shop have a close look at it, you maybe missing other damage, it is close to the bond area. If it checks out, use some nail polish match the colour.

That is also why I ride an old steel bike in the winter. Dents and scratches add character and I don't worry about them.

If that's all it is, you should be fine. ride it like you stole it.

Unless the shop has X-ray vision they will see the same thing that we do.

Don't drink out of that bottle till you get rid of that black scum inside and check the wear on that rear tire..

Go to the auto parts store and get a paint touchup pen.

other damage. ;)

The other question is why you're clamping a thin walled AL bike along it's top tube.

Can you do the McKenzie call of the Great White North?

rangerdavid 01-10-10 06:58 PM

i think it's totalled, but I' ll take it off your hands for free.................................

AngryScientist 01-10-10 07:00 PM

ha, i was wondering today if they had closed HH drive yet, i guess its open though.

any auto parts store will have little bottles of touch up paint, pick one that matches most closely and also a bottle of auto grade clearcoat, looks like you should be OK.

how was the ride otherwise, it was pretty chilly out there today?

echappist 01-10-10 07:01 PM

BFers, many thanks for your quick replies.

luckily, it's on the outside. the marks were results of me taping a cue sheet to the bottle using some heavy duty tape. the tape did quite a bit to the outside of the bottle

yeah, very good call. i normally put the TT on top of the clamp & let it hang. the clamp is actually not tight, and i did once clamp the thin CARBON portion of the TT & i heard a pop. ain't gonna do that again

as far as the touch-up is concerned, does it put another layer of clear coat?

no problem, as long as you pay shipping equivalent to the cost of a CAAD9 frame. i also happen to operate on the barter system:p

well, the HH is closed past exit 1 of the palisades parkway, but my friend & i ventured ahead anyway. however, the spot past the exit 1 climb (downhill portion) is quite sketchy. there were other icy spots, but where i fell was near the large waterfall, where the entire road was iced over. the ride was excellent otherwise. we went up to piermont & there were quite a few people there. i didn't find the cycling speed that i lost along 9W though:innocent:

btw, given your nutley location, are you an angry scientist at Roche?

No, no Roche for me, though that place is huuge. i try and ride HH at least once a week when the weather is favorable, glad you didnt get too banged up out there, the bike looks like it should be OK too.

alpine climb up to the police station was pretty clear. there is a lot of salt on the road, and i don't foresee it going anywhere. i think if you have a metallic frame, go for it. we decided to try HH after seeing another guy on it while going across the bridge. only later did we find out that he was on a titanium frame. what's that saying around here, titanium/steel is real or something:thumb:

Work for the NYPD bomb disposal group?

Gluteus 01-10-10 07:25 PM

BTW, how do clamp a CF bike if the seatpost is also CF?
For some adjustments/work it's just not practical to let it hanging on top of the clamp.

Unless you were using a hammer to adjust the RD I don't know how that would happen, haha

A CF seat post is much thicker than most parts of a CF frame and made to be clamped (it's clamped in the seat tube, right?). I always clamp mine on the CF seat post and don't give it much thought.

it doesn't need to be that tightly clamped (& don't do what i did). one thing you could do is use the cellophane wraps & coat it around your tt/seat post.

well, a more inexperienced version of me stripped the thread off the bolt on the RD. and that was a DA RD, no less! on the other hand, i do have replacement pulleys now
