$2500 on ebay...would ya?
have a chance to pick up a possible steal on ebay. new top end specialized bike with ultegra
components. Seller seems reputable - all positive feedback.
Drawbacks - assume there is no warranty through Specialized. Others?
Worth a shot - and any possible risk? any tips or recommendations buying through ebay?

depends on how big of a deal you are getting, if you are saving just a couple hundred then it's not worth it IMO but it's around 1K then go for it!

If you think it's a deal, use escrow (www.escrow.com I think - there are others). You get a period to inspect the merchandise before consummating the deal.
I always use escrow on purchases of $500 or more.
Etiquette is to get agreement from the seller before bidding since the service costs $ (either or both can pay).

It's hard to tell not knowing exactly what you are bidding on, but I understand not wanting to post the link.

Its not the Specialzed S Works Tarmac because that has a Dura Ace parts, and the seller is not reputable.
I believe he's looking at the "2009 Specialized Tarmac Expert 49cm." Fits the description the OP gave, and has all ultegra SL components:
https://cgi.ebay.com/2009-Specialized...item2c528524bb
All the other ones are mountain bikes, and he asked this in the road bike section....
Therefore, in conclusion, if you haven't been able to tell already, let this post be proof, that I have way too much time on my hands.

if you're looking at an expert i'd say 2500 is high. i got one for less than 2k on ebay (and watched quite a few others sell for around the same price). Look for 09s being sold from spec dealers online, ask if they will provide a walk-in receipt with the bike and you can get a frame warranty (but probably not the 1 year all parts warranty).

couple of things to be careful of:
1) this isn't really a "top end" specialized bike. It's a nice one, but very far from the top-end
2) specialized's warranty only applies to the first buyer, so you'll be out of luck if there are any problems
3) look up the same bike in an LBS and figure out how much you're really saving. If the bike is not a 2010, be sure to take that into account
