Cleats

Hi Everybody. wondering if anybody would have any thoughts/suggestions on this. So my wife is now using cleats and it seems like about 15 miles into the ride, her left knee on the outside is in a lot of pain. This only happens to her left knee but the pain is so bad she is in tears. She use to ride with toe straps and never had this problem. The cleats are STP and they are adjusted more towards the toe of the shoe. Any thoughts. Thanks for the help. Brad

Sounds like that cleat is not in the proper position. Unfortunately, everybody's knees prefer different positions, so your only two options are to get a local pro fit or experiment until the pain goes away.

I'd choose the first of UrbanKnight's options. Immediately.

Are you suggesting that the way I fitted myself to my road bike - over the course of 2 years with some illotibial issues, doctor visits, and plenty of recovery periods off the bike - wasn't ideal?

I suspect this happens to a lot of us. I'm currently off my bike because of fit issues.

If I were a bike store employee, I would talk people's money away from some of the high-zoot stuff and towards getting fitted. If people like us - bike nerds - can't really fit right after consulting other bike nerds, online calculators, et al, there's no way the average guy will. Then again they probably don't really hit it too hard so they might not feel the cumulative effect (damage).

+1 on getting fit. I'm getting some pain in the groin area and below my kneecap because of fit issues. The pain intensifies while climbing and over longer distances. I've got a pro fit scheduled for tomorrow. According to the fitter, it'll take about 4-5 hours. With the rain coming all week, I doubt I'll be able to see the effects until next weekend, but I'm hoping that this will resolve the issues.
