Best Road (duh!) Clincher

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Road (duh!) Clincher

Hey guys, I usually don't leave my nest in C&V, but I need your opinions. I'm looking for the best road clincher tire set available for under $100.

They must meet these requirements:
-Performers in both wet and dry conditions
-Tread preferably wears slowly
-Durable, yet a nice ride
-Preferably somewhere around $75 for the set.

Can you guys give me some advice?

Conti GP4000s will probably be one of the biggest recommendations from this board. Depending on where you order them from, you can find them for around $75 a pair (I last got them for $72 from ProBikeKit at the beginning of the month, think they were on sale a bit then). Pretty low rolling resistance, good wear, decent in the wet.

I've heard that in terms of wet conditions the GP4000s were disappointments.

You are thinking about it way too hard. If you're not racing, just get the cheapest tires from a reputable manufacturer. I like the Vittoria Rubino.

The OP has spec'ed a ******** combo of crtieria anyways. It can't be be long lasting and ride nice. It's one or the other. For the price the OP is spec'ing it's tyres with around 120tpi. Which is garbage. Up the TPI, for a nicer fast ride and durability suffers.

E.x veloflex record/pave, vittoria corsa evo

Pcad rides GP4000's.

On BF that's like a Papal Endorsement.

I'm still running P2R and have a fresh pair sitting in my spare bin.

you might want to try krylion carbon.

I'll look into some Vittoria products, and then I'll look at Conti's. Thanks for the help guys.

You're right, I don't race that often besides a usual five high school road crits and then a few others throughout the year. I don't race on clinchers, but I would like some quality clinchers for every other week of the year.

OP, I tol ride GP4000s (clinchers and tubulars). I'm not sure they are the most durable tyre out there, my Michelin Pro2s seemed to last longer.

I found they were "sketchy" when new. After a 100 or so miles they were fine. I don't know if they put on a protective coating that needs to wear off.

I'll have to add to the majority and say pick up some 4000s's if you can find them cheap. ProBikeKit, as suggested, is usually a good bet.

From my experience, the Vittoria Evo Corsas will not last nearly as long and are not as puncture resistant. I also wasn't as confident in the rain. However, the ride quality is much better (I'd even say impressively so) than the 4000s's, and dry condition grip was excellent.

It might be worthwhile to say that I recently threw an old 4000s on the back of one of my bikes in a pinch after the Corsas were toast, and I'm still riding it.

Similar dilemma here so I'm curious too. My Veloflex Paves are getting worn and I am looking for something a bit more durable.

Well, after all of this I'd say it really comes down between Conti GP4000S's and Vittoria Rubino Pro's (or Diamante Pro's). I'll have to head down to the LBS to see if they have any of the aforementioned.

I have always been happy with my conti gp4000s tires. Going to try bontrager race x lite ac for this year though, see how they fare.

Yeah, I even rode/raced GP4000s on the track (outdoors, cement). I recommend them, too.

Yeah, I'd like these for several seasons. I think I'm going to pick up the GP4000S's. Should I go with the S? Is there a real difference between the two?
