If you're doing really well on a climb and someone still passes you without saying a word, you can pretty much reason they are in a pain cave the likes of which you can't understand. To them you're just a pebble to avoid. Salute them either silently or physically as they pass.
On the other hand, when I pass someone, I habitually check over my shoulder to be sure it's safe to move back right, which has undoubtedly started more than one "He gave me 'The Look'" diatribes on this ever-devolving forum. |

I really enjoyed the guy who flew past me not once, but yes, twice on Friday after I had finished my ride and was cruising home. He was classic - wanted to race, though he didn't inform me of this. AND, he didn't say anything when he passed me, neither during the first pass nor the second. (he got caught in two lights that I managed to time up)
I did laugh at him the second time he passed me and hopefully he heard it. I think he got very worked up thinking how great it would be to pass a guy with all those gears and lycra when all he had was one and some denim. |

When on the road on my road bike I always pass other cyclists on the left, but I rarely announce myself. When on my moutain bike on a bicycle path that is shared with pedestrians I usually slow way down just in case the pedestrian or their dog makes some sudden move into my path. I do not announce myself, but I often click the shifter a couple of times to get their attention if they do not hear me approaching.

If I'm riding the bike with the Fulcrum wheels, I just coast for a second when I'm right up behind them, and let the 'nest of rattlesnakes' buzzing alert them.
This is for those rare moments when I pass others. My personal preference, as someone who is more often passed than passing, is for the passer to make some noise while behind me, rather than getting beside me and suddenly saying, "Hi!" Cough, pant, let your freewheel buzz, fart - just let me know you're there. |
