Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gear Bags

My old faithful gear bag that I stole from a runner a few years ago finally got one too many holes. Anybody got a bag they find functional above a standard gym bag or timbuk2?

I dig how my old one had a separate space for shoes, and I swear I saw a guy who had a bag that had holders bottles, helmet, etc

This ain't cheap but it's the best bag I've ever run across. I've had mine now for 4 years and it's survived everything from airline cargo holds to multi day race weekends. It's got the seperate compartments for your shoes helmet clothes etc. I can get my shoes/helmet/three sets of kit/changing kilt/rain cape/food/water bottles/glasses/butter/wallet/keys and more in it. On top of that it's comfortable enough to wear on your back and ride with. It also has a built in rain hood.

I have one of these. One step above a gym bag, I can fit my shoes (one in each of the side pockets), a spare water bottle (mesh pocket), my helmet and all my gear for a ride or two. I use the pocket on the side to hold my racing license, power bars etc. Not as nice as the one mentioned above but significantly cheaper.

The one from specialized is great.

After you buy it, I hope someone steals it from you.

Pearl Izumi used to make a nice bike duffel with gear/shoe/helmet pockets. I googled it and all I found was this one. Probably something that new stock shows up in the spring, they have been making them forever. I have two that are both 15+ years old with lots of trips and abuse on them. Great bags.

Not if you consider that it will hold your helmet, which protects your most valuable asset.... or something like that.

Nice to see that PI is moving into the luxury market. Plus you get it shipped for free, which makes the cost easier to bear.

In the past I have found that bags that have compartments for certain purposes are usually the least functional of all. For instance, those side pockets look like the would only hold the smallest of water bottles, not the bigger ones which would render them useless if you are using the bigger ones, etc.. Do you find that everything goes in its proper place in this bag? If so, that's a good buy, despite the price.

I have the same Craft bag mentioned earlier. Under $25 from PBK. It fits all my gear with a lot of room to spare. I only wish it had a second bottle pocket.

I think that's the ticket, just have to wait for them to restock it.

Yeah everything goes in it's place...the functionality of this bag is really really amazing. I put large bottles in the side pockets all the time. Race day list of what goes into this bag:

Helmet
Shoes
2 pair socks
Shoe covers
2 Jerseys
2 bibs
base layer
HR strap
2 pair gloves
hat
after race clothes
changing kilt
rain cape
Oakley case for my M Frames
tape for numbers
scissors
chamois butter
sun screen
gel bottle
power bars
SRM computer head
multi tool
a bunch of miscellaneous other crap that I'm forgetting. The best thing is that I'm not digging through some bag looking for anything, everything is easily accessible.

I use a North Face Base Camp Duffel. It's a nice bag, basically waterproof (can't submerge it but it's fine in the rain) and you can get one basically as big as you want. It doesn't have the compartments and pockets that it sounds like you want though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I figured "stole" was being used in the same way as every woman I have ever dated has ended up with my favorite sweatshirt at the time, and why I no longer have any of my rugby kit. Not to mention the various items I have from other friends... "thanks for the shirt...you know you're never getting it back, right?"

This.

I have the smaller Race Exp Air which I use to take my clothes to work in when I commute to work. I love their Air Comfort design which is a strong rubber mesh that makes contact with your back so its well ventilated instead of sweat soaking into your bag. It's big enough to fit pants, sweater, under shirt, lunch container and some other small things which is all I really need. If you're looking for something bigger check the commuter models they have. My wife got it for me on our anniversary which made it the first cycling specific gift she's ever gotten me; it meant a lot considering how much stick she gives me for the little bike schwag I buy.
