What sports did you play growing up?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What sports did you play growing up?

What sports did you play when you were growing up? In school ... in college/university ... at any time prior to taking up cycling?

I was into individual sports, rather than team sports.

I loved Track and Field ... my best event was the 200 metre dash (or whatever they call it), but I also raced the 100 metre, 400 metre, and did long jump.

In the winter I was into cross country skiing and spent hours out there on my skis ... usually with my mother who also got into cross country skiing. I still enjoy cross country skiing, although I can't do much of it where I live now.

One year, a friend and I joined the badminton team ... I was never really good at that for some reason but it was a lot of fun. I actually wouldn't mind doing it now if there were facilities around.

Then in my early 20s I got into body building and trained for a couple years with an amature body builder. I still get more of a rush when I'm weightlifting than I do when I'm cycling.

I was big into Tae Kwon Do from the age of 5 til about 12. I played little league baseball and football for a couple years but wasn't very good at baseball and wasn't big enough to play football once I got to high school. I played lacrosse and wrestled in middle and high school. In college I autocrossed, but haven't had time or money for it the last few years.

I got into skiing about 4 years ago and cycling about a year and a half ago. They've become my main hobbies, although I'd like to get back into motorsports time and money permitting.

Ice hockey - if there was a patch of frozen water nearby, I was on my skates as a kid. Neighborhood kids used to go down to the pond and expand the clear space of ice, by hacking the reeds off at the water level, then we'd get all the garden hoses from our houses, and hook them all up to whoever's house was closest to the ice, and flood it. We also played floor hockey in the gym for many many hours.

Was also into BMX, downhill skiing (later boarding), and swimming.

I raced go-karts for 5 years before I got into cycling. Here's me at a rare street race. These things were sickeningly fast.

Team sports, American football though I dabbled with individual sports such as wrestling and track in high school.

Was into roadbikes (10 speeds back then) until HS football. Got back into them while in college and the football career ended.

Tennis (12 years, summer leagues and HS varsity). No college team, so I stopped playing regularly in 2000. Ran cross country in HS too, as well as the strength team. I tried out for the track team, made it and the coach was a 50-lb overweight dick, so I quit.

I never was into sports. But when I was in my 30's, we moved to Colorado, and I discovered that I was excellent at plodding long distances uphill on foot. But there wasn't much of a way to do that on the coast when I was growing up, and it's not exactly a competitive sport, either.

Wrestling. Took this year off from the college team because of my workload. Next year I will be back at it. If all goes well the cycling I do over the summer will help my conditioning.

In high school I played basketball, ran track and cross country. In college I was on the track and field team 4 years and played football my senior year. After college I played soccer, softball, and basketball before one of my ankles wore out in my early 40's. I began cycling as a result of the bad ankle.

i've gotten into dirtbiking and cycling more as an adult. i prefer the individual sports to the team sports now. i really treasure my time to myself, and both dirtbiking and cycling are therapeutic, almost meditative for me.

If I wasn't such an obvious nerd, I could pass as a jock.

Swimming K-9
Softball 1-6
Tennis 6-12
Volleyball 9-12

College - I could have been on the tennis team but decided my studies were more important. I dominated the intermural tennis leagues instead.

Post college - volleyball and snowboarding. Attempted soccer but I have no eye-foot coordination. Started cycling when I started snowboarding.
