Thompson stem

I do have one but i want opinions... Compared to other brands and models this is maybe the lightest stem ever even comparing it to carbon ones. now does anybody think that the stem it is too stiff compared to other ones??

Thanks

Would you rather have a noodley one?

FlashBazbo 02-13-10 08:08 AM

I've never used a Thomson stem and I've never used a carbon stem (and wouldn't). IMLTHO, aluminum is the way to go and, if Thomson's seatposts are any indication, they make a good product.

Too STIFF? A stem? You're joking, right?

Made my comment based in a situation, just put a thompson stem with a carbon handlebar also and for some reason after i did that i felt the bike too stiff for my taste... it is not a think that thomson products are bad... not even thinking on that.

Thomsons aren't particularly light. 'Round 160gms +. They look nice tho.

The Best! I used carbon, but Thomson is excellent!

I haven't tried the Thomson stem so can't attest to it's stiffness but the PRO Vibe 7S stem (Shimano owned) that I have is really stiff compared to the Ritchey WCS alloy stem I have on the other bike.

Thomsons are not super light, but they aren't boat anchors. They are very stiff though. Ritchey WCS series is a lot lighter, but not as stiff (but stiff enough). I cannot see the stem flex on a Thomson, but I can a Ritchey.

I can definitely feel a difference between the Ritchey and the PRO stem and handlebars, but it hasn't been to the point I've wanted to swap out the Ritchey bars and stem.

But WCS is not a noodle. I've seen some stems deflect 5-10mm. Essentially it flexed just by looking at it.

If weight isn't your primary concern, I would recommend a Thomson.

I've used an X-2 for several years now and for a stem, it's great. I can feel a difference between it and a 3T Arx Pro (feels like a noodle in comparison) - definitely stiff. Not super light though, but light enough - most stems seem to fall into a pretty close weight range anyway. That being said... it's still just a stem. Just don't over-tighten the faceplate bolts or you'll crack it (Thomson sells replacements).

I have a Thomson stem and it is significantly stiffer from other stems I've used. They had a thread about this on weightweenies and Thomson stems are one of the stiffest. That being said the stiffness doesn't really make a huge difference in bike handling, but it is nice to have

The only stem that I have used that is as stiff or stiffer than my Thompson is my Syncros Factory stem. Both are excellent, US made products.

What? Did I just see someone praise the looks of a Thomson stem? One that is akin to a puffball jutting out sideways from a tree?

stiffness in a stem is desirable.

just feeling the flimsiness of quill stems... ugh...
