Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Modolo Morphos Shifter/Brake Levers ?

so my front shifter blew tonight, I think... taking it to the shop now.

I suppose 2600 miles is fair from a Sora shifter?

Anywho, I like the bike (Fuji Finest, steel) and was gonna use it for touring after I bought a new bike (someday), so I do need a shifter. Are you familiar with Modolo?

https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...egory_ID=5144#

Performance has 105 for ~$150, Ultegra for $170 -- I have to imagine that the extra $20 is really worth it... assuming I don't go with the Modolo ($170) or Campy.

Would Veloce or Centaur with with a 105 rear, Sora Front, 8-speed ultegra cassette, triple sora crank?

Thanks for yas opinions!

I tried them once but it was a short term test. I thought they felt a bit clunky (didn't see to shift as smooth, heavy throw probably due to shorter levers) compared to STI or Ergo and they seemed heavier too. I have no idea about their durability or reliability though. My biggest problem with them was that the hoods felt uncomfortable and the position of the big levers prevented me from obtaining some of the hand positions I'm used to.

Campy stuff MIGHT work if you can find 8 speed stuff, but you will get smoother shifts from a Shimano shifter. You should get more life out of a SORA shifter. You will also be hard pressed to find anything current in 8 speed other than Sora. SO, if the shifter is indeed toast, a direct replacement may be your only option unless you can find some NOS 8 speed Shimano stuff in someone's back room or on eBay.

khuon, good point about hand positions, I change mine to a half dozen different positions thru-out a ride.

demon, you're right about Sora being incompatible with the rest.

Thanks guys! Please don't think your posts went to waste, cuz I read them and learn something new everyday, but...

the wrench at my LBS (Performance) is a good guy and spent nearly 30 minutes with me going over my options.

For $275, I got parts and labor -- Ultegra shifters, SRAM 89 chain, 9-speed ultegra cassette, gel bar tape, and 105 front derail (which was $14, new, in clearance, missing screws which the wrench had some in his shop and gave me). The shifters came with new cables (of course) and mine were needing replacing anyway. So, I'm poor and can't afford $275, but I think I scored big time for all that... and I'm getting my bike back tomorrow!

Considering that a special order Sora shifter (just the one) was $85 and gonna take a week, well, seemed like there was no choice.

I'm one happy mutha ****a
